Great find - I did enjoy!

Such a shame they last the Ashburton section, although looking how busy the A38 is (at around 19 minutes) it's not surprising the dual carriage way was built

There were, apparently, persuasive arguments at the time that the A38 could have been built slightly 'to one side' and the railway left in place, but talking to someone who knew the protagonists at the time, the DVR didn't put up much of a fight...

It wasn't so much that they did not put up a fight but that at the time the ministry would not sell them the bit between Buckfastliegh signal box and the Ashburton end of the tunnel although they had to purchase from there right up to the stopblocks in the station.

In effect they bought two distinct and seperate railways, although the light railway order and transfer act which had to be applied for and administered by B R only applied to the bit from Totnes to Buckfastleigh.

This it was stated at the time was to ensure the improvements to the A38 which had already been drawn up and awaiting approval .
