This page is to show details of the modifications that i'm doing to my layout converting it from a small round layout to a fiddle yard to terminus layout. reasons are several for this first off i'm like many modellers bored with my layout as it is and want change the second is that i want to do a much bigger layout when space allows and this layout will end up being a mainline riviera style terminus station of the new layout.

I have been modelling now actively for about 6 years but have had a railway since i was 3. uni and career starting and house moving got in the way.

i started building the layout in its round form about five years ago and have been modifying it slightly since then but i've now decided its time for a major change. As the photo below shows i have already started and they layout is in a non-operational state for alot of the time, although it does look good with ballast train delivering more ballast etc for the track relaying.

i will add more pics of the layout as and when i can get chance. below are a few examples of weathering of some of my wagons i have done using tamiya xf72 paint. they were done using a compressor based airbrush with top mounted trigger. i have recently bought a new airbrush with a better trigger mechanism so i don't get so much finger ache.

hi here is some pictures of my locos that have been weathered by dan (details in my signature)

post-17016-0-56440600-1366439105_thumb.jpg

this was a relatively heavy weather that I got dan to do for me, so it looks as though its just about to go into the washer

post-17016-0-03583900-1366439116_thumb.jpg

this weather is just a general mid weather typical of an in service former EWS class 66

post-17016-0-75464500-1366439123_thumb.jpg

This DBS 66 weather came from inspiration whilst browsing the net. a loco that is fairly clean on top but has been doing a very dirty job recently so lowerbody, solebar and underframes are filthy

post-17016-0-51655200-1366439130_thumb.jpg

This DRS 66 was weathered mainly on the underframe with just a light side weather and roof dirt, to give the feel of a normal drs 66 in operation that will need a clean fairly soon

post-17016-0-37275800-1366439145_thumb.jpg

my most recent weathers from dan one loco is dirtier than the other for the reason that although not to my knowledge prototypical (colas normally use 57's for rhtt in southwest) was to create a south west rhtt train. the scratchbuilt rhtt I own can be seen on a previous post and will be suitably weathered in due course.

Good stuff Phil. I have been very tempted to get myself in gear and start layout construction since TrainWest (the plan is there, the boards and half the track aren't!)

Do you have layout plans so we can see the roundy and what you're planning on changing it into?

As with most things to do with my layout it exists minly in my head a d I don't normAlly put it down on paper. This makes in a way for a chaotic pla Ning system sometimes but it seems to work. I'll sketch something down over the next few days see if I can show what I'm trying to achieve. It'll give me something to do during lunch times.

I'll try and get it sorted So I can have it to show everyone by end of this week.

hi everyone,

layout plan is on the way. its is rudimentarty but hopefully will convey the basics.

while you wait here are some pictures of what i've been up to this last weekend. i have finished, almost installing the new platform sections using Hornby resin platforms. cut to size where necessary using my trusty dremmel. they are glued down using bostik multipurpose glue.

the extension that can be seen is approximately six inches to allow the extended track and platform ends to be installed. it is secured underneath using angle bracket and on top using flat bracket one of which can be seen in the pictures which will be scenically buried

More platform sections have arrived. Bargain on eBay. So will be finishing off platforms soon. Once done. I will be finishing off the yard (photos to follow) then tackling the re-wiring needed to accommodate the new track layout. Just been reading "satan's goldfish" thread. Really Inspired by idea of pillar drill would make certain jobs so much easier. Will have to pursuade wife that it is an essential we need for the house.

its pretty big. i hope i can pull it off successfully. first stage almost done. platforms and track. stage 2 is ballast and scenic work on the yard. stage 3 is the big one which i'm seriously nervous about. thats cutting the village and back section off the layout then remove the existing support system (a cabin bed) and design and install the new support system. once all of that is done its then stage 4. designing and creating the new scenic section from the station entrance around the corner to the fiddle yard entrance as can be seen the layout diagram above. once thats done its the relatively simple job of designing and creating a removable fiddle yard.

p.s. thanks for the luck i think i'm gonna need it.

oh tonight i also had some spare time and so painted the bolts on the top of all of the containers that matt has drilled for me.

i've also painted some replacement panels on some of the containers and will when i get chance weather the containers. once thats done then i'll add some more new patches.

Looking good bud, your layout looks very similar to my work bench. Keep looking at my drilled boxes and thinking i should paint to roofs too!

(Looking at your plan, as a rough guess, you could probably control all that with 2 rotary switches and 5 flick switches depending on how many trains you plan on having running at once.....)

the layout does get tidier some time. its at its most untidy at the moment. you may be suprised to know but not a single point is controlled by point motor.

i just like the idea when its at home of the manual chaging that and i've never got round to doing it or planning it.

here are some more pics that i took this afternoon after i did some work on the layout

the first one is of the completed platform ends that have now had there first coat of paint. i've never liked a grey platform but the sandy sort of colour is more to my taste and i think fits better with the seaside location i'm trying to model

post-17016-0-41863400-1367099127_thumb.jpg

the second picture and third picture shows the palsticard i have stuck to the plaform edging to give it more of a feel like the wall that makes up the dawlish sea wall. it can be seen here in its base coat grey colour. when i get chance i'm gonna individually colour some stones in the wall.

post-17016-0-29921100-1367099369_thumb.jpg

this fourth picture shows what is at the moment my short programming track. i'm goona extend it to the length of platform 1 (as shown in plan above) and then connect it into the mainline. it will be when it connects to the points of the mainline double isolated with plastic fish plates so that the track is only powered by the programming track feed. as i have an ECoS it means that as ECoS provides full current and control to the programming track it'll be able to be used as both a programming track and a stabling siding for visiting railtour specials.

the fifth is just to show some more of the painting

post-17016-0-02891700-1367099709_thumb.jpg

the platforms are painted by hand using precision paints p42 l.m.s buildings cream (matt). it was for me pretty close to being a great colour for the platforms
