"Highland Sulzers" - Lochgorm Works, Inverness: Scale Seven

Unlike the last couple or so projects I intend this to be a slow burner, taking a few years to build rather than a few months!

The concept is a simple one.

  • Capture as much of the essence of Inverness Lochgorm Works depot as possible.
  • Model the year 1983, the first time I went up there.
  • Have a go at building to S7 standards

There's no fixed track plan yet, although I have concepts. The build is not likely to start until next year, however I've started this thread now in the hope that the vast knowledge of the RMweb community that has been so generously shared on previous layouts will be available for this exciting new project.

I'm intending using this thread as my own 'hub' for information, so i'll be posting all sorts of links - if only so I know where to find them all !!

A few inspiration shots from a recent visit.

I intend modelling this from the non station avoiding line side (3rd photo), this will give me oportunity to;

  • Model the fuel roads, with their strange corrigated iron shelters
  • Model the small annex shed (that can't be seen in these photo's, ha ha, but will become apparent later - it had blue doors with a circle on them with red and white stripes)
  • The south bound platforms of the station will form part of the back drop (with stock)
  • The back of the 'loco' signal box
  • Lattice gantry signals
  • The avoiding station avoiding lines at the front of the layout for passing traffic
  • Further back there is a hill that rises with a lot of trees. This will form a good back drop.

Sounds very interesting! Buildings that have a lot of history tied up in them and they still find use today. They have managed to keep character, despite modernising.  Plenty of good colour photographs from this era to be found which is always useful too. No shortage of traction choices either!

Sadly, I think the last 24s went in 1980 (and I think they had congregated south of the border for a while before that).

A bit earlier than your timescale but I recall an arranged shed/works visit with my dad in the 1970s (probably around 1977/8) It was a fascinating place and well worth trying to recreate in model form.

Any room for Inverness station? Now that would make a model and a half!!

Hi Damian,

Look forward to the colourful trackplan  :locomotive:

Not suprised you forgot class 37s you might be a bit over them having done a few for DitD. Though a nice Scottish namer with ploughs like 37027 with white stripe along the bottom would be nice.

This might be of interest. Inverness loco allocation according to my Summer 1983 platform 5 book.

Very useful information.

Thank you very much Peter.

I can see this is going to be a cheap job in 'O' gauge.....

Eh?

Nooooooo.

I'm selling the house - ha ha ha

Selling the house would be a step too far as you wouldn't have anywhere to build or put the layout. Maybe just sell the car or children if you have any. lol

I noticed Eastfieled had painted 37111 112  with wrap round yellow ends by 1983, not sure if they made it to Inverness but would be something different.

Cheers Peter.

Mornin' chaps,

During late 83 Inverness gained its own 37 allocation 37 025/035/114/183/260/261 and 262. 183 looked good with the little headlight on the nose.

On Sept 25th 1982 25072 and 27003 double headed the 17.40 Inverness to Aberdeen passenger.

Jan 83 saw 25319 at Keith then 25189/196 and 185 working the 06.05 Inverness to Keith speedlink on different days

May 83 saw one of the Ethels 97250 worked through Inverness from the Aberdeen direction in a freight for trials on the Kyle line.

Sept 83 25201 and 25239 were double heading a Winsford bound salt train between Inverness and Aberdeen.

Cheers

Dave
