World of Wagons by Don Rowland - Model Railway News 1967-1968

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a full list of the 'World of Wagons' articles by Don Rowland that appeared in the magazine 'Model Railway News' in 1967 and 1968. I believe they appeared each month in both years.

I know the March 1967 article was entitled 'Part III - More Minerals' but it would be very helpful to know what the other topics were in each edition to help me track down the ones I am interested in.

Below are the issues I have with items:

Feb 68  P 67 Part x111 BR Insulated Van/Palvan

March 68 Nothing

April 68      "

May 68       "

Wagons of Private Traders starts in Jan 69

Khris

Just to mention that a slightly frail but charming as ever Don Rowland was at Scalefour North on Saturday.  I am sure he would be delighted to know that his writings of 40 years ago were still of interest and use.

From my collection I can tell you the following :-

Pt..1 - January 1967 - Introduction

Pt..2 - February 1967 - Minerals

Pt..3 - March 1967 - "More minerals"

Pt..4 - May 1967 - "Plates, Tubes & Pipes".

Pt..5 - June 1967 - "Boplates, Trestrols and so on". (incl. Pig Iron)

Pt..6 - July 1967 - "Opens and Fits" .

Pt..7 - August 1967 - Untitled but continues the theme from Pt.6

Pt..8 - September 1967 - "Hoppers" (icl. Tipplers)

Pt..9 - October 1967 - "Special Hoppers" e.g. Tyne Dock iron ore etc.

Pt.10 - November 1967 - "Vans"

Pt.11 - December 1967 - "More Vans"

Pt.12 - January 1968 - "Special Vans"

Pt.13 - February 1968 - Untitled but continues the theme from Pt.12

Pt.14 - June 1968 - "Cars and cows"

Pt.15 - July 1968 - "Conflats"

Pt.16 - August 1968 - "The rest of the specials"

Pt.15 - September 1968 - "Brake vans"

Pt.18 - October 1968 - "Conclusion"

.

Where the 'World of wagons' article is sub-titled, the sub-title is shown above in inverted commas.

.

Note, Part 15 appears twice in the July 1968 and September 1968 editions - obviously a 'typo' as the article in the September 1968 edition should be Part 17.

Thanks for the comprehensive list. Shame they are not more than 1 page long but I guess were ahead of their time as no one knew anything about wagons in those days.

What does the Pt.14 - June 1968 - "Cars and cows" cover?

At a guess - since I don't have the articles to hand - cattle wagons and, presumably, things like MOGOs (ex-GW motor car vans) and car flats/cart trucks?

Not quite - a couple of years earlier the Railway Modeller ran a series by the LMS Society - "LMS Wagons" which included a 4mm scale drawing, brief details of the type and a description of how the wagon was modelled. This was a very good series, and the same group produced other articles on LMS coaching stock and locos.

What does the Pt.14 - June 1968 - "Cars and cows" cover?

Cattle vans, MOGOS's etc.

The sum total of wagon writing at this time would seem to have been these articles, some slightly-later one-page photo pages by David Larkin i Modeller, and (very)occasional plans in MRC or MRN. However, even with these limited resources, some Plasticard, and various Kenline bits, I built a few odd wagons.
