allan downes
Ardverikie Castle. Well not quite but as much as I could get into a given footprint which meant it's destined to end up looking nothing like it ! Anyway, here's progress so far. Cheers. allan downes
Ardverikie Castle second stage. Because this is only an impression ( why not model the real thing then ?!) I can stick lumps on where I like so, for the next few days, I'll be desperately sticking lumps on all over the place and it's already sprouted a tower that's not there ! Cheers. allan downes
Ardverikie Castle finished. I might have to re-model the roof on the left hand tower as it sails over the walls too much. What happened here was that while I built all the tower roofs to the same dimensions, I made the width of the flats of the octagonal on this tower 5mm short - 22mm instead of 27 -and now I'm gonna have to try and rip it off without causing too much damage - or leave it. Anyway, here's some pics. Cheers. Allan.

allan downes
Been busy lately with this, another Scottish castle but this time completely freelance. It's not quite finished yet but the next time you'll see it, it will be set against a Scottish background in Carsphairn in a about a month's time cos that's where we go for a break every year so wifey has named it 'Phairns Castle' .- what else !l 25 packets - 80 sheets - of Wills course stone went into the build along with loads of styrene and card so it wasn't cheap modelling. There wasn't a plan, I just kept sticking bits on till I got bored with it ! Cheers. Allan Edited June 3, 2016 by allan downes
Kev_Lewis
Superb modelling as always Allan. If you don't mind me asking, where do you purchase your vast supplies of Wills course stone from?
allan downes
Superb modelling as always Allan. If you don't mind me asking, where do you purchase your vast supplies of Wills course stone from? Thank you. I get most of my materials on line from Hattons these days as they're very prompt and 100% reliable. You can also get evergreen plastics on Ebay but the way it's listed is diabolical when compared to Hattons who make it so easy. As for Slaters plastikard I order that directly from Slaters on line who are also very organised and it only takes a few minutes to place an order which arrives within a couple of days. I used to use Amazon but suddenly they went all stupid and over clever and made ordering anything infuriatingly impossible so I closed my account. Likewise the Hobby Box that when it changed hands they were absolutely hopeless whereas the previous owners were second to none and whether they stocked it or not, they could always get it for you. They were not just good, they were absolutely brilliant and I certainly miss them as a major supplier. Cheers. Allan.
Kev_Lewis
Many thanks for that Allan. I'm currently building with foamboard and strip wood, but I fancy some stone work for the next project,

allan downes
For those who might be interested here's how the Wills stone sheets are prepared. Hope it might be of use. Cheers. Allan. Stage one. Colour with Colron Victorian Pine wood dye which will etch into the plastic sheeting ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stage two. Lightly dust over with matt black acrylic whilst dye is still wet. Leave to dry. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage three. Rub talcum powder well into the joints. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage four. Dab - NOT brush - Colron English Light Oak wood dye over the talc and leave to dry. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fith stage. The sheet will dry out as seen on the sample to the left in about 20 miniutes and will be ready for use. When marking and cutting out always do this on the reverse side of the sheet.

RMweb Gold Revolution Mike B Posted June 10, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 10, 2016 I didn't have a clue how to achieve effects such as these when I started back in the hobby 2 years ago but it's people like yourself that give me confidence to try things I never knew I could do. Thanks for sharing the demo on the Wills sheet. Now all I need to do is learn to build stuff square.................................... Mike
allan downes
The castle gatehouse. A couple of days to build mirroring the same architecture as the castle - stepped gables and mullioned windows (and dirty glazing ) Will probably surround it with a dwarf wall and brighten things up a bit with a few flowers later - dismal places these old Scottish castles... Cheers. Allan. Edited June 11, 2016 by allan downes
