Been quietly modelling well the world goes to hell in a handcart well looking for pasta and loo roll!

here’s  may latest mode (4/6170) British Legion.  IGave up with the frist version as a bad idea so started from scratch. The tender still needs a little work below the tender body but the lip as gone.

Been digging in my box of many wonderful things and dragged out a GEM Cauliflower. I managed to get so far then it dawned on me that all of the Cauliflowers I’ve seen are with the Belpaire boiler. And the kit is a round top boiler.dose anyone know if any round tops made it to BR days?

Also did the Round tops boilers ever have vac pipes fitted or where they all lose fitted.

Well waiting for some bits for I decided to dig out a kit of a L&Y 2-4-2t though already owning a Bachmann model I thought I would convert this into a long bunker Belpaire boiler version. Looking at the Bachmann one  there’s going to need quite a few rivers adding

The cauliflower is close to being finished along with the L&Y 2-4–2t and  took the plunge and weathered the Accurascale Cemflo which look quite good on the layout picture shown part way though the progress.

The cauliflower is finished apart from couplings so it can pull something but I am rather pleased with it. One of the will be done jobs as finally been done a LNWR D205 to go with a D133 all ready built. The inside partitions are painted in a walnut colour for first class and a light wood colour for 3rd which if I remember correctly is maple or pine. Either way they’ve turned out quite well. Though Salford is in the doghouse after I broke the valve gear.  Sorry about that state of the work bench but my farther built it and it’s just the right height though a clean might be good idea.

Finally some much needed parts turned up for the garret. One bogie is built but I need to figure out how to keep it on the track, either a spring of some discretion or add some weight some how. Also need to make a decision on which gearbox I think it as to be a high level one did think of the DJH box but the space is on the slime side. The inner drivers are out. And the outer ones are also unlikely due to frame spacers. Leaving the center wheels will have to drive the model. Though a second frame spacers will add to the interest

Just about to fit two High level gearboxes with chinese can motors to my Ks Garrat. It should all fit in. The original Ks motor couldn't shift the loco let alone pull anything else.

What gearboxes have you gone for? And are you using the original chassis or have you gone for something else.

Will have decided have a rest from comet coaches for a while, so thought I’d try something a little different. I don’t normally get on with plastic card for some reason, but I’m determined to not miss it up this time.

so here is my new and probably slightly mad to try it project so far

  • farren changed the title to farren’s workbench. Ex LNWR 25 ton steam crane p7
  • RMweb Gold

On the build is the Ex- LNWR 25 ton steam crane built by Cowans Sheldon in 1908.

the real thing I believe is at the Crewe Heritage centre. The aim is to produce it in late LMS livery.

Photo of the aim and some of the progress. The main gear wheel is a rough build to see if the way I was thinking of doing it would work. Shows potential I think. If the tops look a wonky that’s because their not glued down.

Bit more progress, did try brass for the hinges but to fiddlely or my fingers. And the insulation type is a bit better but. Dose anyone do etches I wonder.

wheels ordered double spoke went for Bachman cheap.... well easily available and close to size.

The three and four wheel base could corse trouble on curves. So wondering how to fix the wheels and if movement well be needed.

Now this was supposed to be a test before I cut any brass being a tight flint but I have to say it’s turned out ok for the first attempt for the jib a bit of tidying its square which is a surprise to me and much stronger than i thought it would have been,  the black smudging is mainly pen marks.

my thinking is if I can get a old Lima crane I can use the main workings with added cosmetics detailing.  If they fit otherwise it’s scratching head time!

Well  with the body now in 3 d and not just a drawing the Lima mechanism might just work will need to order one to really know. The jib needs a clean and then I’ll decide wither it’s staying or going.  But overall it’s starting to take shape.

The carrier wagon now as wheels fitted the centre wheels slide sideways a little hopefully this will help with running. It in under coat to add all the rivets though no were near as many as the crane is going to need.  The crane as two wheels fitted the bogie needs to be made for the other pair.

Work so far bogie fitted so it’s on all its wheels. Though need a pair is P4 or EM axles so they look prototypical.

The gear box houseing is made and pulls out. Ordered some cheap gears etc from fleebay and we’ll have a play with them when they arrive and see if a rough interpretation of the gears can be built. most of the body work is done bar cylinders and outside gears and lots of rivets.

what’s needed is pulleys 10mm and 6mm. Any ideas where these can be found?

why under coated? It looked messy and wasn't sure if it was just the glue diying the body or if it was a mess but seems ok to me for a layout model.

It's looking good, you could make the pulleys from plasticard, outer layers for the outside of the pulley wheels with maybe some thin rod or strip around the rim to look like the flange and a smaller inner diameter for the wire/chain to go around. Might get a bit trickier to cut out if they were spoked however.

Hi Farren,

May I ask where you got the pulley wheels from as I have some crane projects stalled for the want of some of suitable size.
