Tigger
That was another SWAG Module success As it looks like the batten and been forced passed to me we better see what we would like to do for next year We have the same options as we did after the 2012 event: 1) do exaclty the same again, using the same Fiddle Yards, but with other members buildings modules2) do a roundy-roundy ( using the current fiddle yards but altered )3) do a roundy-roundy using a new simple set of loops on each line type fiddle yard, with all four corners, both ends and the whole of the other side as modules4) do a figure of eight....5) do something else...............................I know Sidecar Racer has an idea here, so I will let him explain Over to you guys

If the two fiddle yards were turned round and moved to the door end of the hall they could then be moved out a bit sideways too this would then enable us to have a larger centre area , then by having inside curves as opposed to the outside ones we have used so far we could have the centre of the room as the viewing area . With this arrangement the drivers would be at the back of the modules but now have a view of each other as opposed to being back to back making for visual communication, but more importantly a view of at least half of the running lines , so if there is a derailment ( unlikely ) , or an uncoupling ( more likely ) the two drivers would be able to see it . This was not possible yesterday and we relied on viewers to shout stop . This would have no effect on the straight modues already in use but will impact on the corner ones , as an example , if the BRM team felt inclined to join in next year then their corner would have to have the back boards changed to the other edges . I think this could provide us with more width at the wall end of the room and the possibility of another small module fitting in , so instead of one three footer we could probably get two in . We cannot gain any length as Tim still needs to keep the top end of the room for other exhibits . Discuss .
Tigger
This sounds good to me as it will not only provide the operators with a better view but will hopefully encourage more people to play All we need now are some volunteers to make the "internal" corners (I know Ramblin Rich is dying to make a module )

DonB
It might encourage volunteers / help press-ganging if a sketch was made, showing what you already have (existing or promised), and what would be required to fill the gaps in your proposed / potential configurations. Tigger
Thanks Don, a very good idea I will do that very soon when we have sorted out the which way people would like to go
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted April 30, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 30, 2013 There should still be room for me to stand on the outside to play with my private railway i reckon so I'm in favour too. I do wonder also about getting a bit of transition in on the corner modules as thus far there's been a fairly abrupt change from curve to straight at the joining point of the modules which I think has contributed to derailments (in the past) and parted couplings (this year). Tigger
I am sure we can make sure you can have enough space to play with your private railway Mike. I would like a go next year please great idea about the transition, if we go with the other Mikes plan there should be a chance to include that in the new corners or even the the bridges
RMweb Premium Sidecar Racer Posted April 30, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 30, 2013 I think we would certainly need to leave a bit more room to the rear of the window side than the hatch side as there is the fire exit to consider , And it would be further benificial if the piano was not on the hatch side thus allowing things to stay closer to that wall , We would just need room for an operator . Also it would certainly help if we could get confirmed numbers of those who would like to play . The module that Pete Bedding donated is available if someone wants a head start , it only need a scenic treatment so might suit someone who has no room to do carpentary work or thinks they're not as good as they might need to be in that area . Also if we get some more takers then I would be quite happy to let someone do the first module off my fiddle yard , this would then give a new start section , they might need to do the track joggle depending on the width they decide on but other than that it it's a free choice for scenic work . This board could also be stretched by a foot to four from my three .

I definitely need to examine some sort of remote control uncoupling for next year as a Plasticard shunting pole is not the best way to do the job. And Station Cat has expressed 'an interest' in attending next year so if she does we will have another willing helper to assist overall.
Tigger
Over the next couple of days I will produce a scale plan based on Mike (Sidecar Racers) idea and see how it fits allowing for Mike (Stationmasters) needs All these Mikes are doing my head in
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted April 30, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 30, 2013 You only have two other Mikes to deal with - I had three of you ! Just a thought - if you left Mike's module on the window side of the room, but nearer the radiator, it could be operated from the back with plenty of room. You'd then be able to push the other side up against the hatch wall. But feel free to tell me to keep my nose out

Good thinking Stu , but I was wondering in the piano went into the window side corner this would automaticaly give us the extra bit of width that side , certainly enough for somebody to operate their shunting puzzle . As that bl**dy piano comes out further in to the room that the hatch counter this will get the wall side a bit further back , these pics give some idea of sizes . http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/55739-taunton-members-day-29-4-12-a-photographic-record/page-2 Photo 2 , post 36 . Looks like piano is further out than hatch counter , but now looks like it would'nt go in the other corner . http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/55976-the-2013-swag-module-project/page-2 Better view here , photo 2 post 33 . definatley further out . RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted April 30, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 30, 2013 Good debate going there, gents. What you need to consider is that this piano is a bit like the Tardis. No, it's not bigger on the inside than the outside (well, I haven't actually checked...), but it has a habit of moving around without warning and turning up on different sides of the same (or different) rooms, depending on the year. With a bit of luck, it'll have materialised in the Committee Room upstairs next time!

RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted April 30, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 30, 2013 Maybe we could shove the piano outside the emergency exit and bring it back in after we've finished (always hoping of course that it doesn't rain or snow while it's outside?) Arthur
How about putting the piano where the chairs were, in the entrance hall, and stacking the chairs outside? I've got plastic 'tarpaulins' which could keep them dry if necessary.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted April 30, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 30, 2013 I'm not sure we are allowed to move the piano...
Lady_Ava_Hay
Moving pianos is a specialised job as if they are moved on their castors they frequently dig holes in the floor and go out of tune. Better on uprights than grands but still a bit fraught. Very Chas and Dave afterwards. How about a sponsored piano smashing contest? Should go down a storm. Isn't that a song title? Hum the first few bars and i will pick it up from there on the Joanna, tosh.
BG John
I'm not sure we are allowed to move the piano... Rev. Heath invented the perfect style of layout to be displayed on this object. If it's there, why not make use of it? As this is in the module thread, you could have various examples of Piano Lines that are swapped around during the day! Tigger
Lets turn the piano in to a module Seriously though, if we move it to the corner against the wall between the radiator and the fire escape there should still be enough room, as I said I will draw it up and see what happens PS Ramblin Rich has gone very quiet
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted May 1, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 1, 2013 Is it possible to ask the hall owners to arrange for the piano to be in a particular place for the SWAG event? Presumably if moving it is a skilled job they must have suitable arrangements in place for those hall hirers who need the piano to be in a particular place for their event? Presumably if moving it is a skilled job they must have suitable arrangements in place for those hall hirers who need the piano to be in a particular place for their event? I can certainly ask the question. They will probably need to move it to a certain location in advance of the event, and if specialist movers are required, it begs the question as to who moves it back, and when, after our event. Bear in mind that this year (in common with most years), once we have vacated at 5pm, the next group is a religous group coming along at 6pm. If they need the piano in a certain place, that could present logistical difficulties...
Tigger
Guys This link should show you what I believe Mike (Sidecar Racer) was suggesting with the modules facing in towards the centre. This would mean that we would need volunteers to build / convert the existing corner modules to suit the new arrangement's. http://sdrv.ms/11VNySF We have the module that Pete Bedding kindly donated that needs some scenic work done (any volunteers) and that then leaves space for one more 4 ft module, either one that has used before or a new one. Please let me know what you think
