SpoorObjecten
Thank you for reporting me Sir. My 3d printed models have nothing to do with me working for Shapeways nor do they sponsor me (i wish they paid for my prototypes) Both are 2 different things (SW and my own train hobby). There is no commercial link between my stuff and my shop, there isn't any link attached to the website. This is just to show 3d printed models as I'm sure a lot of people are interested in. Please do note that this has been posted in the 3D printing group and I'm sure I've made some things that will inspire other people to make as well Just to show you some other stuff, I'm not just printing at SW but also at other manufacturers: Envisiontec Ultra SLA from Materialise Mitchell ps. the DM'90 (painted in first post) is from Materialise as well Edited May 7, 2013 by SpoorObjecten
bmthtrains - David
No offence, but the reason for including your email address in several (in fact, the majority) of your images indicate to me that you have the intention to sell these models (very nicely done, no contest on that!) to fellow modellers, or offer them the option of buying these from your employer directly. This is a case I'd think the site owner should decide about. If you have prior consent from Andy York, who runs the place, my concerns are alleviated and I shall remove my messages. Personally I think you are being quite rude and accusatory here. If you have a problem then report it, but to publicly accuse Mitchell of all this is a bit off. By your same logic, I shouldn't be discussing my own 3d printing as they are also available to buy, as are almost everyone's. one of the key benefits of 3d printing is sharing the designs so anyone can print their own cooies of the designs. That Mitchell works for Sapeways is of no consequence, he doesn't promote them, and has always been open about where he works. Should Dapol Dave not be allowed to post because he works for Dapol? Funnily enough, people who work for modelling companies often have an interest in modelling, and you can't censor someone sharing their efforts just because of where they work. edubs
It was very helpful to me recently to know that Mitchell was an employee of Shapeways, and a railway modeller, through reading some of his previous posts in this group, and he very kindly helped me out with some advice recently after I contacted him directly. Shapeways customer service seems pretty good, but I needed to speak to someone who knows what a solebar is. Nice stuff by the way fella.
RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted May 8, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 8, 2013 First time, I think, that I have seen signals 3D printed. Really useful as each country has it's own designs and so often not commercially viable for large manufacturers to produce. Same for the level crossing barriers.. I would be interested to know what the motor bogie is on that double-deck unit.
SpoorObjecten
My apologies for using the banner of "spoorobjecten" the reason for this is that they are actually a direct copy from my webshop, it was easier to use those pictures than upload new pictures A customer of mine (Marcel) painted the dwarf signals: And a painted signal: And look at these 2 awesome videos! the signals in real action (1:87) Signal dwarf signal This is a picture of the painted level crossing by Ian: The video of them working: http:// Without being commercial Ian said it costs him around 50euro for the 3D print, lights, paint and motor So why am I showing all this, just because I'm really proud of being able to 3D print stuff, and seeing other people painting it and use it at their layout! @Edubs, your welcome, always a pleasure to help 3D modellers. @Joseph, the motor in the dubble-deck unit (1:160) is a tomytec tm-04 or 03 (not sure )
Wild Boar Fell
Hello Mitchell, Those designs are very impressive, I have seen some of your work on Shapeways's site and in a Model Rail Magazine article a few months back. Out of interest which drawing software do you use (I would guess at Blender)? The finish on some of those units is very smooth especially if they have been produced by SLS, I hope you don't mind me asking how you achieved that finish? Keep up the good work, Regards, Wild Boar Fell
Etched Pixels
That Tomix chassis integration is really neat.
RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted May 8, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 8, 2013 That Tomix chassis integration is really neat. Sure is. Which is, I think, why I didn't recognise it. He has taken the original chassis apart and used the two ends separately???
Andy Y
Thank you for reporting me Sir. I did check the report and although the posts do contain possible advertising (and prior agreement should have been requested) I was satisfied that the content was of sufficient interest to outweigh any commercial considerations.
Rabs
I agree - He didn't even mention that they are for sale, let alone try to push them. The intention was clearly to share 3d printing experience. Fantastic modelling, thank you for sharing.
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted May 9, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 9, 2013 The signals are marvellous - some of the best model colour light signals I have ever seen and they capture the prototypes superbly.
SpoorObjecten
Hey all, thanks @Andy Y, thank you very much, I have indeed no intention to sell my stuff here, besides that, it's dutch, not a lot of people are interested in buying dutch trains on an UK forum Reason for the banner and email address was just because it was a direct copy from my webshop, let me know if you would like to have those removed. In addition my apologies for not asking permission first! @Wild Boar Fell, I make my models in 3ds Max, to be honest I find Blender really hard to work in. The models are really smooth because the high amount of polygons as shown here: The painted trains in WSF have this smooth surface due to car primer sprayed on the model, note that this will remove your details as it's quite thick. Though for these models there wasn't a lot of detail anyway :-) @Joseph, Yes I took apart the tomytec train, recreated the whole chassis in 3ds max and made my own version which suits the train (once again my apologies for using the banner, this is a direct copy of the picture!) @Mike, Stationmaster. Yes it's great to see people painting them and using them on their track. Picture below shows the difference of the dwarsignal which is for sale by a company selling dutch signals, and the 3d printed version... both are made for 1:87!
RogerE
I do hope my wife, who models Dutch HO, doesn't see this thread. She might get ideas about going to N gauge as well!

SpoorObjecten
To be honest, I don't finish the trains, I just like to model and 3d print trains :-) Though some of my customers (1:160) use overhead sheets and crystal clear: Model by me, painted by Bisschop Modelbouw @RogerE, specially for you wife, i've made dutch signals in 1:160 as well Cheers, Mitchell ps. i hope you guys don't mind all those random pictures :-) Here's another one in 1:450 Printed in Color! edubs
Hello Mitchell, Sorry to stray from topic, but can you tell me when Shapeways are going to introduce choice of orientation of print?
SpoorObjecten
No problen Yes we are going to introduce this, but it's a really big project so I haven't got an ETA for you! It will affect every single part of the company thus it takes time. For example, choice of orientation will lower the printing efficieny, thus the price will raise. Do we want to raise the material price, do we want to ask money for orientation? Does the customer know which is the best orientation? Is your customer allowed to rotate? what if the customer doesn't like the orientation he choose, is this the customers own fault? Our internal system needs to be changed, our production team needs to know in which orientation the model needs to be printed. And the list goes on :-) so it's on our to do list (i believe this year!) but I'm not able to give any details yet.
