Just to prove some of us are totally mad  I have just been fitting a dcc decoder to this

post-7650-0-86880600-1449931550_thumb.jp

It belongs to one of our members - its has its faults but it is pretty.

Technically it has a Digitrax DN136D decoder in the boiler - I have rewheeled the tender and added some proper pickups to get it to run sweetly.

So dcc fitting can be done in some  of the Midland Railways finest. Strangely enough 3 other "chip fitting specialists" wouldn't even give a price for doing this work.

The joys of having a number of clients with a mix of scales and gauges - it means I get to do all sorts of weathering and dcc fitting.

So today has seen  six On3 wagons - these make Bachmann On30 wagons look small!

and a Robinson O4

The latter two are brand new and were literally awash with oil. - A quick wash over with a bit of CiF before I started to get rid of the oil - and its still leaching through the plastic locomotive body.

and again three quarters front view

post-7650-0-73812200-1452792160_thumb.jpg

again fitted with a Zimo 648 Decoder and digitrains sound

Both built and painted by Graham Varley form DJH kits - the Crosti rebuild started as a Crosti 9F kit - might do one of these for me!

Surprised that you've not got ridd of the BG roof ribbs

My client only wants it weathering and a change of couplings.

Ibtake the ribs off mine using an exacto chisel blade. Don't have to do that on kitmaster!

In the workshop today is an EM Gauge scratchbuilt (by Mike Edge) model of the last LMS built Black 5 44767 - fitted with Stephenson link motion. An absolute peach of a locomotive!

It has been weathered to represent an engine cleaned at a shed.

Heavier weathering of the over flows from the tank filler. Oil spills do show up well on these.

Recently I have been focussed on wagons. There are a wide variety to be worked on! All are fitted with EM gauge wheelsets (from Alan Gibson), then have 3 link or instanter couplings fitted, then weathered. The fitted vans have pipes added as appropriate.

These vary from BP Green TTAs through to ex LSWR opens.

A few pictures, first up a selection of Fitted wagons.

Been busy fitting a decoder into a very old Ks tender driven Midland Spinner. In the end I threw the KS Mark II motor away as it was asking for more current than a chip which would fit into the loco could give.

No photos of that but here are some from another recent commission... A set of Hornby Sea Cows - delivered in pristine EWS maroon with white axle box covers. The client sent me some good colour photos and off we went

post-7650-0-77317500-1470332160_thumb.jpg

Graffiti by using a draughtsman's' pen loaded with poster paints and a very fine brush.

post-7650-0-89546000-1470332171_thumb.jpg

one was just plain.. dirty and rusty

post-7650-0-02997900-1470332334_thumb.jpg

another had some little bits of graffiti added by using some of the excellent Railtec Transfers

post-7650-0-40854200-1470332344_thumb.jpg

one had some painted patch repairs

post-7650-0-91500000-1470332485_thumb.jpg

and one had a  fair bit of rust

and finally some more hand written graffiti

post-7650-0-29264400-1470332490_thumb.jpg

Normal ink and powders plus some poster paint/inks to achieve the required level of weathering but as requested by the client  these have been sealed with Tamiya clear matt varnish

Having obtained a Loksound micro decoder downloaded with Legomanbiffo's 08 sound files I took a Bachmann 08 apart (which, in itself does have it challenges).

I then fitted the chip (it fits above the glazing in the cab), put the wires from the decoder through a hole in the bulkhead of the cab (using a piece of shrink wrap to cover the coloured wires)  and modifying the chassis to allow a sugar cube speaker (behind the radiator) the loco was tested and the body replaced.

It was then weathered using a 80:20 ink to water mix and powders (black, dust and a bit of "Rust".

post-7650-0-00618900-1471374796_thumb.jpg

it now awaits  the OK from the owner

Hi there

Many thanks to Baz I have now received the Class 08 back and runs it briefly on my test track. The weathering is excellent and really has improved the look of the Loco no end. IT is my first DCC sound fitted loco and have to say the sound really does add something to the experience, loo forward to paying around with it in due course.

Many thanks Barry, excellent service and definitely will send some mor locos to you when funds available.

As this was weathered about 5 years ago I have added some more dirt around the exhaust to bring it up to todays' weathering standard

and I have now  weathered  Black 5 44856.
