Good model shops in Kent?

If you are going anywhere near Faversham then The Hobby Shop is well worth a visit. Is where I get most of my purchases from, is well worth the hour plus train journey from Sandwich. Its only a small shop in physical size but is a bit on an Aladdin's cave inside with a wide range of different stuff stocked and with what I always found competitive pricing to match. I have been a customer of this, and their old shop in Canterbury, for about 15 years now so would happily recommend.

...and I too would recommend the Hobby Shop at Faversham as, following the closure of all the model shops in Folkestone, Cheriton and Hythe, it's my closest proper model shop. Harvey runs the place by himself and stocks UK as well as European outline stuff plus all the other modelling bits and pieces you might want. If he has not got it he can normally order things in for you.

If you at the other end of Kent you might think about looking at Kent Garden Railways at St. Mary Cray near Orpington. Andy just does not do garden railway stuff but also the likes of Bachmann, Farish, Hornby and OO and N suppliers. Not been to his shop but have bought from him at the many local shows he attends.

..and, in the middle, you've got The Signal Box at Rochester.

I second the recommendation for Kent Garden Railways. They moved to a bigger shop a few doors down a couple of years ago. He's always well stocked and prices are pretty good considering he's not on the scale of the box shifters. Whilst Andy's interest is in the big stuff, I've never posed him a question about OO that he couldn't answer.

Can I second the recommendations for Kent Garden Railways. I was visiting relatives in Orpington and called in at the shop for a look around last week.

It is remarkably well stocked for a shop of its size with a wide spread of 00 and N goods apart from the garden railway kit.

Andy was installing a sound chip in a large scale continental loco when I was in but still took the time to bring down and test a couple of locos for me.

Does Signalbox still exist? I thought it was bought out by a national chain that then went bust. Some of the people that were involved in it have started a shop in North Kent.

No, it's been gone for a couple of years. Some of the former staff set up Invicta Model Railways in SIdcup, which is worth a look - it doesn't quite have the depth of ranges stocked by some other retailers but is worth having on the radar.

The staff from Signal Box set up Invicta Models in Sidcup and provide pretty much the same offering but on a smaller scale.

If you are looking for spares and other kit building ephemera, the Model Shop in Woodchurch is worth a visit - don't expect to much RTR though. They also specialise in baseboards and related hardware.

I'm new to the forum, the hobby (only started at the end of June) and the Ashford area, but there's the model shop there, on a bus route from the International station. They do all sorts of RC and scale stuff but from what I can tell they're good for OO and N gauge railway stuff.
