Arboretum Valley is a largish contempory layout in 00 based around the concept of an estuary, something of a hybrid between the Bristol Channel and Budapest in my minds eye.
While being current day, it has an element that is based upon a preserved line that is connected to the mainline. AV (Arboretum Valley) hosts a film and TV studio "Zollywood" which then gives us the back story to host heritage locos. The layout measures 52 x 11'6 at present, built in a new extension loft, but there are plans to extend it into the old loft in the future. The layout based around Peco 75 track forming a folded figure of 8 on two levels and using Digitrax DCC and RR&co Traincontroller software. The intention is to have upwards of 10 trains simultaneously operated under automated schedule, and the ability for multiple human operators to follow semi manual train operations under train controller signalling. Well... that's the plan at least.

AV is pretty much a plonk and play layout at present, although we are slowly (very slowly) improving some skills with an aspiration to add some scratch build elements.

So how did we get here...

This is a layout created with my wife Jaz who will often post the pictures on here. It has been on another forum for a couple of years, so I do not intend to start this thread from the beginning,(unless asked) but rather post from where we are now.

In general Jaz deals with the artistic elements, while , being artistically bereft, I deal mostly with construction, electronics and infrastructure.
This is our first layout, started about 2 years ago , though we did have a few false starts before that.
We have no background in railways of any sort and so everything about this layout is a first for us.
It all started a few years after Jaz bought me a Hornby train set one Christmas. It sat in a cupboard for a couple of years, then one summer, just as we were discussing an extension to the house, I decided to unpack the train set.
It was intended to just be a simple board for the track mat I found inside the set, but as with many things, it just sort of evolved from there. What was it? well I now know it was a Castle class, but back then it was simply a green choo-choo :derisive: I try to not take myself too seriously, so if my humour offends then apologies up front and be warned I may upset you again, sorry :unsure:

The point... well if there is one... I hope it shows that anyone can start a layout, even if they have never had an interest in trains previously.

If you are expecting this layout to match the fantastic standard of some of the layouts, such as I see on here and in magazines, then this thread is probably not for you.
We like to experiment and learn as we go, but not everything is a success, we will go back later and try and improve, but for now we want to try and get the layout functional in all areas. For some, the results may be a blight on the landscape, and we accept that, but for us it is more about the journey, than the destination.

<p>In order to try and put this in context I am going to start showing pictures from around the area in which we have based our preservation station. This is loosely based on Heartbeat and Harry Potter with a passing resemblance to the real Goathland on the NYMR (North Yorkshire Moors Railway), with a large artistic licence. Some of the first elements that will be portrayed are Zollywood Station,  RAF Zollywood, Port Lynn and Kalborough Station. 0672 Zollywood Station. At the platform. 0682 Leaving Zollywood 0702 Entering Zollywood 0698 Heartbeat reference with Scripps garage 0695 Heartbeat reference with the church and a 1960s wedding 0748 This is a reference to the real life caravans that are behind the farm that is used to film Greengrass' farm in Heartbeat In order to not upload too many pictures at once I will do another post for the next element.</p>

<p>In order to try and put this in context I am going to start showing pictures from around the area in which we have based our preservation station. This is loosely based on Heartbeat and Harry Potter with a passing resemblance to the real Goathland on the NYMR (North Yorkshire Moors Railway), with a large artistic licence. Some of the first elements that will be portrayed are Zollywood Station,  RAF Zollywood, Port Lynn and Kalborough Station. 0672 Zollywood Station. At the platform. 0682 Leaving Zollywood 0702 Entering Zollywood 0698 Heartbeat reference with Scripps garage 0695 Heartbeat reference with the church and a 1960s wedding 0748 This is a reference to the real life caravans that are behind the farm that is used to film Greengrass' farm in Heartbeat In order to not upload too many pictures at once I will do another post for the next element.</p>

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

My pictures which I posted  yesterday (I uploaded direct from My PC) appeared fine yesterday,

Today they appear to have disappeared. Is this a glitch?

I notice they no longer appear in My Media either.

Being new to posting on RM I have been careful to not touch them once successfully loaded them.

I had intended loading a second lot, but they have timed out and not even appeared in My Media.

Am I being stupid? If anyone could put me right I would really appreciate it.

Is it better to link from my Flickr account?

lhs Table 2 (8x4'3" max)was always a holding spot for resin buildings, we plan to change this whole area to incorporate Sheffield Park elements. This is a picture of it at present. (The PC screen can just be detected, the shadow is the giveaway)

0816 Zollywood village. This water appears when the cove is pulled out to allow access for necessary modelling or repairs.Normally it is not insitu here, but it makes for a nice picture. A rather nervous postman is eyeing up the German shepherd, wishing he was somewhat invisible lol

Zollywood Heights -An explanation for muggles   This is based on The Harry Potter books/films and refers to Hogsmeade. They relate to magic people living in our own present world but non magical people (muggles) are completely  unaware of them living alongside us. The early Hornby buildings have a close tonal quality and several have tall chimneys. Major artistic licence allows us to give a flavour of these stories. The womping willow (also magical) is as previously mentioned homemade. The Knightbus is a triple decker complete with chandalier. The flying ford Anglia (which had a slight repaint to make it more in keeping) has landed in the womping willow, NOT a good idea. Harry Potter et al have yet to be placed on set. They and a film crew are in the pipe line. (some in the Soviet wastelands at present, possibly arriving by dragon. What no dragon emote? A familiar then.....  )The early Hornby St James Church makes an acceptable Hogwarts; but a better picture needs to be taken before posting and avoid letting the side down   The roads don't lead anywhere as the vehicles all fly, and people often just use broomsticks, so the houses back out directly onto midair.....and back to the pictures......

This layout looks very, very nice!!! I love the waterfall!!!

But thank you, it is really appreciated.This is our first layout on RM and people posting and liking is very encouraging  

I checked the You Tube link on our very first poster. Nice reference matter. will explore more later.

And I will definitely check out a fellow My Layout poster/ Pumbaton

We were very apprehensive as the standard is so high here, we did not know just what to expect. So the responses we have had so far are very encouraging.

We are also happy to receive feed back on anything that people see wrong. We know very little about railways, so any pointers will be taken in the spirit they are given.

Beyond Zollywood Heights we cross the room and here we have RAF Zollywood, this is a re-vitalised old airport that is in the process of being transformed into a heliport. As such there is an open day and a bunch of re-enactment people. Some of their costumes are lacking the correct historical detail, 

Below the cliff top is Port Lynn. The cove was already conceived when someone said we should add a Doc Martin element, in the future there will be tweaking. Crossing onto the other side of the loft we have the town of Port Lynn.

FYI This area has been raised to allow the trains to travel under scenery via tunnel portals, under Port Lynn town is a storage yard approached via tunnels from the next scenic area, Kalborough. The separate areas have only recently reached a standard where they need to be joined and this is being addressed.

0884 RAF Zollywood above Port Lynn Cove. These two will be simply joined with plaster cast allowing the cove to be pulled forward when necessary for access. There are sliding rails insitu for this.

0833 Port Lynn is above the tunnels coming back down the loft we come into the largest station Kalborough. At present we are battling it out with the platforms attempting to get them as tight as possible.

Kalborough is our main station. This will be an art deco station. Reflected by the buildings in the surrounding area. We recently (today) continued with some serious work in this area. We are experimenting with a granite cutting. The latest work needs photographing but here is some recent photographs.

We are still fighting the good fight regards the main station platforms. But at the moment they are not up to snuff. Still here are some photographs to tide me over this area.

 

1154 Gives a flavour of things to come. The platforms were made from 2 layers of plasterboard (1x9mm and 1x12mm) This took into consideration the passenger stepping off the train including the fact the track is up on track bed.foam. We use Peco platform sides. Railmatch concrete in acrylic was initially painted, then some washes are being built up for the weathering. There is a lack of ballast as we want to get the trains as adjacent to the platforms as possible. We would like to take pictures of people stepping off the trains onto the platform in the future in a manner that does not look as though they are stepping over an enormous chasm.

No ballast will be added until we are happier with the platforms side, then the tops will be coloured properly and then the building etc put in place for the final times. At the moment they are like yo-yos.   Yes, No? It's a bit like the hokey pokey...left foot in...left foot out. At least the granite cutting is slowly coming up to snuff.

 

1162 These next pictures give some carefully snapped views of this area whilst avoiding the fact that the tracks are basically sat on bare track mat.

I have just recently got into weathering. This post van has some railmatch and citadel products, and even a touch of real mud.

1163 The weathering of the British Rail Land Rover is purely mud and water applied with a paint brush. The advantage being that if I change my mind it can just be rubbed off with a cloth.

1164 This is viewed across the tracks from two high points avoiding the tracks. The trees will be soon replaced with ones more appropriate for the front of the layout.

The next pictures will be the Union Station for Kalborough. At present it has the Hornby Terminus Station, although this might yet be replace.

Wow!!! ;)

 

What a cracking layout and looks like you've had some fun making it and playing running trains.

 

A lovely take on some contempary themes too.  There's a kind of freedom in a layout like this. :)

 

Some lovely cameos and the scenics are great. From what I can see of the weathering nothing stands out-everything blends together nicely.

 

Like other have said the water effects are really good.

Hi,

Real nice layout! It's AWESOME!!! I see you can run full length trains ;)
I particularly like the harbour, you can almost smell the sea air, now I just need to find a ice cream!

The ice cream van is temporarily at the RAF open day.  Though it does move about  lot, later pictures will confirm. i notice it's the same kids though, greedy little pigs. The only reason they're skinny must be all that running to catch the ice cream van....unless there's a friendly invisible transporter nearby. Maybe I need to include an indent on the grass and Scotty's head floating in mid air  We have a nice chinook. for the see thru aluminium.
