Wycrail '13 - High Wycombe - 2nd November

Hello

As my colleague John said earlier we had a great day out at High Wycombe where we were looked after in splendid fashion and also above and beyond the normal call of duty to enable us to get the layout working .thank-you. On the subject of layout plans in show-guided I am not bothered one way or another aboyut them . As the layout I took yesterday has only 3 tracks and no points I can't see that it matters much. As the gentleman who has raised the issue seems to find fault with something at every show he attends or layout he sees in a magazine I look forward to seeing his appearing somewhere in the last few years left to me; complete with track plan of course.  Get a life.

                                                                                                   Cheers

                                                                                                          George.

Great fun show! Always is! Cannot thank Mr Mellors for his help in running the trainset. Next year It's my well overdue chance to return the help and play trains on Ian's latest which is booked for '14.

Didn't get about too much, but captured this snap of some 'Dibber25' chap looking like he'd just landed in some toy train railway nirvana....

Having had a most enjoyable visit to the show, and avoided the roaming lens of Mr Media Nevard (which was just as well at one particular point), I got home ready to devour the show guide.  And I am appalled to find that it did not include the recipes for any of the cakes - especially Aunt Gertie's coconut cake (which was most enjoyable) :jester: .

More seriously though I think it might always be possible for individuals to find something not entirely suited to their individual ideas or tastes at a particular show although in my experience it is extremely difficult to do so at Wycrail where just about everything is as it should be, or even better, at what is a non-specialist show with a wide range selection of layouts and traders.  On here we have, for example recently looked at 'local shows vs big shows', and we have previously debated the content of show guides - these, I agree with Andy are particular subjects which if they need to be addressed at all should be tackled in their own threads.

However as far as layout plans are concerned I will pass just one comment - I watched, and had a chance to operate (thank you DLT),  Bridport Town which is excellent in every way.  A track plan would probably reveal no more than a few minutes standing looking at it but what it would not reveal is the wide range of operational interest it offers - that can only be seen by watching it and how it can be worked.  And seeing how not just the track layout but also the control system (and mind of the operators) use the potential it offers.  That can really only be gained by standing and watching and perhaps a bit of thinking.  And that is just what the very friendly atmosphere of Wycrail gives those of us who visit the show.

On behalf of the High Wycombe and District MRS a big thank you to all layout owners, their operating teams, Demonstrators, traders and of course all the visitors whom have helped make Wycrail '13 such a successful show. I also thank you for the kind comments on here.

The subject of layout plans in the guide is duly noted and we shall see what can we can do in the future as we welcome such feedback and are always looking to improve.

Well, what can I say, what a bloody fantastic 30 hours of pure model railway fun. Hard work but worth it every time.

I set off from work at Eastwood at 2pm Friday

Arrived at Pete Harvey's place at around 3, dopped off Ivor's boiler for rolling and had a quick butchers at some nice Rail Grinder etches etc

Got to the Hotel in High Wycombe at 5:30, checked in then headed over to the venue for 6pm

Assisted where I could with the set-up (tape measure holding, caretaker chasing, moving and labelling an infinite amount of tables)

Adjourned to the pub for beer and chips then bed

Breakfast at 8am (how can it be a full english without black pud or hash browns? - must be a southern thing)

Arrived at the show for 9 and Chris was there practically set -up.

Played trains all day and left at 5:20

Arrived back at Pete Harvey's for 7, picked up Ivor's boiler, PPM60 chassis etch and a delivery for RBE

Back home at 8:05pm - Chinese, some film about Romans, GP qualifying then bed

Infinite thanks as always to the HW&DMRC and Chris N for letting me play with his trainset :)

DIY today is my penance

Now I have got myself sorted, I have been able to sort through some pictures from yesterday.

I managed to grab some time to do a customary wander round with the camera to capture at least one picture of every layout attending. Sadly I always seem to miss one out...this time it was Fisherrow Yard; apologies!

So, as a happy memory for those who did attend this excellent show (and a bit of a wish-you-were-here for those that didn't), in alphabetical order are:

I think this was part of the MERG demonstration stand as opposed to being a layout in its own right. It was so effective, however, I though it deserved inclusion in these pictures...

A special word for the demonstrators, who were displaying some very fine modelling, and especially Missy who happily (or seemed to be  :))  talked about point rodding despite it being towards the end of a very long day!

Final big thank you to the organisers. It was a large show, with lots of participants, and to keep that lot in order must have been a herculean task...

Claude.

Thanks for posting the pictures - its always good to get a photographic summary so soon after the event.

Whilst Muz has posted a comment above on behalf of HWDMRS, I'd like to add my thanks to all of the exhibitors, societies, demonstrators and traders for making it such an enjoyable day - I have to admit that I still have not yet caught up with my feet, which seemed to leave me around 8.00 yesterday morning!

In thanking those who formed the reason for attending the show, we also need to add our thanks to all of the visitors for coming along - we hope that you enjoyed it - but specifically to all of the club members, their partners, children and friends, without whom we would not be able to set up and run an event of this type & size.

As club members, we do realise that we have managed to find an awesome venue to hold Wycrail at, but without our members the show would not be possible, so:

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE HIGH WYCOMBE & DISTRICT MODEL RAILWAY SOCIETY!

This was my first visit to Wycrail and I was delighted with the whole show. Easy parking (early) and a very light and spacious venue. A really good mix of layouts and traders. And the carpentry skill employed on the 'wooden guard rails' was second to none!

My compliments to 'Muzz' and all the Wycrail team for a great show. Thank you all.

Brian

There's a bit of discussion in MREmag.com about one of the layouts that appeared at Wycrail this year, so I pulled my finger out to sort the photos taken yesterday:

All the cake pictures aren't my fault. Muzz made me do it. He was most insistant that I tried the refeshments.

Well that was a pretty flexible arm that didn't take much twisting....

This show restored my faith in model railway exhibitions.

Inspiring layouts, great organisation, friendly, layout operators well looked after, best show guide I've seen for years, good food and I got to play trains for eight hours.

I also met an ex-work colleague- niether of us knew we were railway modellers

It was a great honour for our small club (Liphook & District) to be invited and we hope to return at some point in the future with the new layout we've just started.

Just to add my thanks to all at HW&DMRC for another excellent show.

This year's "Cake of the Show" award goes to the lemon-curd filled cupcakes, topped with a tiny licorice allsort  (picture number 4 in Phil Parker's slide show).

Best Regards,

ZG.

PS: Slightly disturbed to find myself included in the background of one of Mr. Nevard's pictures. Not admitting anything else, though.

Had a fantastic day with Bad Aston. Was well looked after by the exhibition crew, couldn't ask for more. Such an enjoyable day.

It seems that some layout operators have taken recent criticisms of non-moving trains being displayed to heart. This pair (identities hidden for legal reasons) have obviously decided that the simplest way to stop moaning is to modify the display.

I don't get it?

You may have missed the long running debate over a layout at the BRM show that had problems and subsequently little ran at times ;) We were actually taking advantage of a quiet moment to take some snaps of my latest loco, typically someone with a camera turns up at that moment

That was the one I was refering to. However, people moaning that nothing works or finding missing rivets are a perenial model railway discussion.

Anyway, taking photos of prominent exhibitors doing something odd is always funny. :sarcastichand:
