Class "37" Photos...

Recommended Posts

There are quite a few on my Flickr photostream, they are not in any order,

not many close ups, mostly working freight in the 1980s...

To emphasise the lengths we went to, to snap 'six-eighters' doing what they were intended to do ....

.

Circa 1979 - a Cwm Colliery - Llantrisant coal train viewed from the roof of a rotting PW hut approaches the site of Common Branch Jct. in torrential rain.

My first ever 'railway' photograph - taken circa 1964/65 at Waterhall Jct.

.

My most recent 'railway' photograph taken less than a mile away at Ely (Main Line) 1:00pm today.

.

Say something about the longevity of the design.

The one timetabled service that served more than the just the Rhymney Valley.

.

2V07 06:59 Rhymney - Radyr (run around) then 5V07 Radyr - Canton ECS.

.

37425 does the honours, calling at Ninian Park on 3rd. May 2005.

(This stop was more operational than profitable, as it picked up the Canton shunter who undertook the run-around coupling and uncoupling at Radyr)

.

Now, the loco has gone, loco-hauled services in the valleys are history, and Ninian Park seen in the background is a housing estate.

Very nice and atmospheric, a class 37 in its natural habitat.

I still think a 37 looks best in blue, at the front of a coal train.

Several of my photo trips were made to South Wales, if I had planned a day out, and it rained, I still tried to make the best of it,

Here are a few of the better class 37 shots from my Flickr sets:-

Firstly 2 from South Wales which would have been everyday shots for over 20 years

Wasn't there a 37 hauled Rhymney to Fishguard service in the late 1990s?

Yes, there was a Rhymney - Fishguard Harbour for a couple of years, summer dated.

.

One year it was a Cl.50 duty - another year a Cl.37 diagram.

.

There have also been Rhymney - Cardiff - Buith Road workings in connection with The Royal Welsh Show at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells. The train ran on ECS to Llan'dod to lay over.

.

Here's 37411 on one of its' first outings after a 'heritage'repaint. It's on one of the evening Cardiff - Rhymney trains, at Cardiff Queen St. 10th May 2005.

Brian,

The roof might have been rotting, but not as badly as that stop block at the end of the short siding that was the 'up' end of the loop at CBJ!

You ought to post the ones of the train coming up the line from the other direction which you pm'd to me some time ago.

Regards

Richard

That brings back a few memories (mostly of me failing to get a decent photo of these trains as they headed uphill through Roath/Cathays.  37411 was a familiar sight in my first years in Cardiff.  Sad to see how it looks now (see post 255 in Big Jim's thread):

Here's my poor effort of a 37-hauled Rhymney service in the last few weeks of the loco-hauled services:
