Literally straight off the boat 2-3 days previously, 66956 is onto engineering duties in the Clitheroe area in November 2008.

Despite the gleaming paintwork, the exhaust silencer is already rusty

A couple of weeks later and one of Freightliner's older locos is also on duty showing paint flaking and rust around the door, cab side and leading edge of the side windows

Nice 'out the box' shots Mick, and its interesting you pick up on the rusty silencer. As delivered, the wheels, silencer and knuckle coupler (EWS only) are unpainted rusty colour steel. I believe the wheels and couplers are down to US regulation on not painting them so any cracks are easily spotted.

Model companies have been very keen to supply models with silver silencers, right back from the Lima 66s, through Dapol and Bachmann too, though now this is changing, but I've no idea why this would have begun in the first place. The only 66s, as far as I'm aware, to appear with silver silencers are a couple of the recent DB repaints, 001 and 185 I think it was. So prototype follows the model!

Good point there Rivercider - I don't know about Jo, but I find it difficult to take a 'good' shot of a 66, or another shot that happens to have a 66 in it (hence some of my more 'arty farty' shots posted here and elsewhere!). Occasionally a nice composition will just present itself, it's then just a question of spotting it and having a camera to hand...

Thanks for the kind words and 'likes' for the compositions everyone, as you say Nidge, sometimes a composition just appears as you drive round a corner, or walk that bit further. Perhaps because I've grown up with the things, and got so used to having the 59s around here too, the outline has become normality, with a 37 or 47 making welcome variety rather than reminding me of better times in the past. Anyway, enough waffling, a few more pictures. I got into the one hundred and eighties last time, so let's kick off with 66185 last Friday, well, a week ago exactly, and 66004 too since it was about half an hour in front of it. There's something about the DB red with the yellow NR wagons that I like, especially set against a nice blue sky. What was that about primary colours, again?

Nothing rare here, but a couple of occasions....
66020 and 66188 top & tail a special in South Wales
The train visits the freight-only line to the Quarry at Machen

In the first pic, it passes the lovely old former station building, which is now a private dwelling

The last couple of pics were taken at Margam,
66004 heads West, with a train of steel coil

EWS 66057 at Stone station, Staffordshire.

Looking a little "tatty"?

One of the "Lickey Banker" locos with remotely operated uncoupler - small lamp left of the MU socket to see when coupling up and air cylinder just visible behind the right hand buffer to uncouple on the move.

Cheers,

Mick

My kind of hoppers. What working is this?

Those hoppers are 33-70 9382 Uafoos. I believe Bachmann are releasing the hoppers soon althought not this version, the ones Bachmann are doing are the earlier version. These are the later build which has a different roof and other bits which might make converting the ones Bachmann are doing very difficult. The working was a one off as far as I'm aware it was GBRf 66740 on a 6M67 Working into Peak Forest with 14 Polybulk wagons. (Lackenby to Peak Forest to Mossend.)

Had a quick look through the thread, and i'm not sure you've had one of these yet - Advenza's 66844 (which had previously been a DRS 66/4, and after Advenza became a Colas 66/8, and is now a GBRF 66/7!) sits at a very wet Darlington, July 2009

Hawarden Bridge

One of the box opening modellers - prototypes do exist - 66010 is very new at this time - can't remember the exact delivery date.

A rare visit by 162 to the "Elephant house" in Tavi Junction yard having some investigative work undertaken.

One TOC charged the 'loco's owner' about 2 grand for the use of their pit for the day. So nice to see cross company cooperation in this day and age of the modern railway don't you think?! :fool:

66031, sat idle, near the rather makeshift footpath

which crosses Margam Knuckle Yard

EDIT: Who says ballasting should always be neat? ;)

The last time I was there, someone had carried out some spot replacement around there with concrete sleepers- however, instead of removing the wooden ones, they'd simply laid the concrete ones in the gaps between..

Yes, the trackwork there is a real mish-mash

On the road next to the one the 66 is on in that pic,

there's a rail-joint which really drops, when traffic passes over it....

Have they paid due attention to the ballast? I hear you ask....

...No, they just poured some dry cement around it! :O

66 200 Margam again - and the visible track doesn't look too bad.....

My contribution for today:

66188 came through on a nice long rake of TTA tanks.  Would appreciate knowing what the working actually was.
