Still wearing its original livery, DBC 66106 accelerates across Heaton Lodge Junction and takes the 'Up Lancashire and Yorkshire' line with 6M16, 07.25 Wilton EFW Terminal to Knowsley Freight Terminal, empty binliner on 5th February...

... and accelerates up to line speed.

Veering off-topic for this thread:

That is a lot of rail off-cuts in the picture. Presumably has been some work done there recently.

Surprised that they were chopped into short(ish) pieces but not collected during the possession.

There has been track work recently in the area.  The window to complete engineering work along this stretch of line is very short each night.  I would guess that the rails that have been replaced have been chopped ready for easier collection when there's a longer engineering possession arranged.

Hopefully the following gives some context to the traffic variety and frequency on the line currently.

I'm unsure if you're familiar with the lines through the Calder Valley (apologies in advance if you are) so by way of explanation reading from left to right on my photo the three lines are the;

  • Up Huddersfield Slow
  • Up Huddersfield Fast
  • Down Huddersfield

The visible point work, part of Mirfield East Junction, is the 40 mph connection between the two Up Huddersfield lines.

Out of view, immediately behind where I'm standing, is the other part of Mirfield East Junction which is a connection between the Down Huddersfield and Up Huddersfield Fast.  This then forms a section of reversible line for 3/4 mile until Thornhill LNW Junction, where one pair of lines diverge towards Healey Mills and Wakefield Kirkgate, and another pair of lines continue via Dewsbury to Leeds.

Hopefully this Google satellite view link will add to the above;

https://www.google.com/maps/@53.6710028,-1.6729124,421m/data=!3m1!1e3

These are busy lines as they form one of the (few) routes from east to west across the Pennines.

Day time passenger services are provided by;

  • TransPennine Express via Huddersfield (generally 5-6 per hour in each direction)
  • Northern via Huddersfield and also Brighouse (generally 4 per hour in each direction)
  • Grand Central via Brighouse (4 each way per day but weighted in the Down direction in the AM and Up direction in the PM)

That's the Monday to Saturday service pattern.  Sundays are a little quieter, but not much.

It's also worth mentioning that TransPennine Express operate passenger services throughout the night;

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/MIR/2019/02/14/0001-0800?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt&toc=TP

There are also a smattering of empty coaching stock and light locomotive workings during the day.

Freight traffic is heavier now than probably at any time in the past 10 years or so.  The line is the only route used by the biomass trains from Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax power station.  At this time of year there are generally 5 (occasionally 6) loaded services per day Monday - Saturday and the corresponding return empties.  These services are lengthy trains and eastbound (ie loaded) are timed for loads of 2,400 tonnes.  To illustrate, here's a video of GBRf 66768 with an empty biomass working;

GBRf 66768

Usually there are two day-time paths for loaded and empty biomass workings, with the remainder going over night.

There are also day time and night time paths for the following regular freight;

  • binliners from Liverpool to Wilton (usually 1 or 2 loaded per day timed for 2,000 tonnes, plus return empties)
  • aggregate from Arcow quarry to sites around Manchester (several times per week timed for 2,400 tonnes, plus return empties)
  • bitumen tanks from Lindsey Oil Refinery to Preston Docks (usually 3-4 times per week timed for 1,760 tonnes, plus return empties)

There are other irregular flows too.

It will be interesting to see how the line is re-engineered when the TransPennine Route Upgrade actually starts along this stretch.  Quadrupling and electrification are in the current plans I understand.

Took this one in 2012, loco was travelling from Basford Hall to Leeds Midland Road. This was a regular job on a Saturday at the time, used to work a liner back from Stourton with a different engine.

The branded livery is now defunct, so hopefully this will be of use to someone.

The Wilton to Knowsley at Crows Nest Junction, Hindley, Nr. Wigan. 66 174. Passing at precisely 2.05pm. 21-2-19. Only five minutes late according to the info' i had read.  I'll try and make it a regular weekly visit to see these trains from now on, i would have preferred to see a '60' on it though!

I found this sitting in the up relief line in Totnes the other day. What I thought was interesting was a red lantern actually in the cab. At the other end of this one wagon train was a Colas class 70. Don’t see either of these locos down here very often, though I stand to be corrected, obviously

DB Liveried 66135 leads the 6E26 10:55 Knowsley Freight Terminal to Wilton Efw Terminal 'Binliner' through Acton Bridge on a sunny Friday 15th February 2019. I seem to recall that 66135 was the subject of Bachmann's original release of the Class 66 in EWS livery back in 2005?

22-Feb' '19. 2.01pm. 66 174, passing through Daisy Hill Station on the Wilton-Knowsley binliner.  Most of the workings last week  seemed to be cancelled, anyone know why or when they will return? Typical i start spotting again at my nearest station after a 20 years absence and they stop running! :rolleyes: Daisy Hill is having its platforms lengthened at the mo' so access for decent pics' is bad.

A long way from its namesake, 66757 West Somerset Railway rumbles through Huddersfield (West Yorkshire) on 24th March 2019 with 4M10, the Sundays only 13.32 Doncaster Down Decoy to Peak Forest Cemex, empty bogie hoppers.
