I hadn't realised that OTAs with the original (non-extended) ends were still around and in use. Or are these not OTAs and something else?

These are PNAs. P stands for 4wheel privately owned wagon.

The sides are collapsed down when empty like in this shot of 66114 heading the empties northwards up the joint at Ruskington in 2007 on a diverted service, before it became the norm...

Thank you both for those responses.

Looking at the underframes I assumed that these were conversions of the OAA/OBA/OCA/VAA/VBA/VCA/VDA family of vehicles, as the OTAs were.

Makes more sense as these are presumably brick/block traffic whereas the OTAs are timber wagons.

I'm guessing this is also the 4D56, 11.32 Biggleswade Plasmor to Heck Plasmore.

Just checked - yes, the reporting code was 4D56 at that time.

Wonder why they run with the sides folded down when empty? Particularly with the much taller (and fixed) ends in position.

Pictures I've seen of them loaded shows the sides strapped leaning on the load, which isn't full width. So do they not have a locking position and merely drop either way?

Yes basically stops load moving, and "gates" lay flat on tins and are strapped

No tins under gates can just lay flat.

Also worthy to note they are an absolute pig to hawk along in the wind

Gissing

26 February 2020

66783, The Flying Dustman, on 0A34, 14:27, North Walsham GBRF - Ipswich Reception GBRF (17:58) - light engine

F*&%^$$ng camera malfunctioned (dirt on the contacts) and I missed this taking the tanks to North Walsham so I waited for it to return, luckily running very early.

A few recent uploads to the Flickr page

A few a bit older first, from last year.

49530773336_456234fa1a_h.jpgRed Velvet by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

66100 'Armistice 100 1918-2018' and 66104 sit in Westbury Up Yard. 66100 is on a recessed 6M20 that was unable to go forward to St Pancras and will instead do so the next day, whilst 104 is atop the bulk ballast set, stabled away from the virtual quarry as it wasn't running for a few days.

66722 'Sir Edward Watkin' and 66725 ' Sunderland' come off the single line at Bradford Junction working 6V64 Carlisle Warminster.

49566855561_92b15c30ea_h.jpg66756 6V84 Winterbourne by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

One of the final batch of 66s to be built, 'Eurocab' 66756 leads 6V84 Clitheroe - Avonmouth past Winterbourne with a mix of JPAs and the older 4 wheel PCA tanks.

49566854611_738b09d19a_h.jpg66543 4V35 Winterbourne by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

66543 passes Winterbourne with 4V35 London Gateway - Avonmouth. This was a service that started up after Bristol West Depot closed and services diverted to Wentloog.

49567374097_b35cd82b3c_h.jpgO44 on number 4 behind 004 by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

When DB had the Mendip contract, it was common to see four or five Mendip trains stabled at Westbury over the weekend, locos attached ready for Sunday night and Monday morning. 59004 'Paul A Hammond' with Sunday night's 7O44 for Botley sits alongside 66065 on Monday's 7O35 for Fareham. In Westbury's Down Yard, 59004 is on siding no. 4 and 66065 is on no. 5.

I'll put a second post up in a few minutes as there's too many links and things in this post and it's making my eyes go funny and I'm liable to be easily confused after a 12 hour shift!

Second up then, a few from the last few days.

Thursday 27th.

66115 approaches Severn Tunnel Junction working 6V92 Corby - Margam steel empties.

With the sun low in the sky, 66019 leads a mix of covered and open steel carriers on 6Z48 Margam - Middlesborough AV Dawson through Cardiff Central.

49606323212_c9a3edee42_h.jpgMixed wagon move by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

An interesting mix of wagons moving from Margam to Newport ADJ behind 66101 and 66078 on 6B23: an HTA, two BDAs and a BLA. The HTA must be one of the few fitted with buffers at one end to allowing the following wagons to be attached to it.

49610818802_350ae6d46d_h.jpgA rare beast in the 21st century by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

King coal is much diminished on 2020, with just a handful of coal trains still running in the UK, and even fewer still carrying British coal. 66088 is waiting at Cwmbargoed with one such service, 6C93 to Margam which carries coal for use at Port Talbot steel works.

49610567161_eda1e1d3ec_h.jpgWet Welsh Coal by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

After leaving Cwmbargoed, trains must descend to Ystrad Mynach, where the freight only branch joins up with the line to Rhymney. A few miles into its journey, 66088 leads 6C93 Cwmbargoed - Margam downhill past Bedlinog. At this point my boots were still dry, we hadn't gone back to Cwmbargoed for 6M77 yet...

49610077008_30eb0ce057_h.jpgTwo in one day...and two wet boots! by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

Some days see a second daylight coal train to Cwmbargoed, taking coal to Hope Cement Works in the Peak District. 66131 arrived as 4V01 Hope - Cwmbargoed and is seen after loading and running round, ready to head back down the valley with 6M77 Cwmbargoed - Hope. The train runs to Margam via the Vale of Glamorgan line, where it again runs round to head for the Peak District. The walk along the grass bank to get this shot involved falling in a ditch up to my knees in water...yeah. Two boots full of water and sodden jeans did make me question the wisdom of visiting the bleakness of Cwmbargoed today, not helped by the 45 degree heavy rain all day. Still, I'm happy with the result, atmospheric weather and two coal trains bagged in one day. Could be worse!

That's it for 66s for now, I'll try to chuck some 60s, 37s and other bits onto RMweb in the next few days
