Yes it did need a freshen up. I remember seeing 66528 at Midland Road a few years ago now and even then both cab ends had a severe amount of rust resulting in them missing quite a lot of paint. When I first saw 66504 in Powerhaul livery I thought that it didn't suit a 66 but now that the livery has been revised it looks a lot better. Originally 504 had been painted grey below the cab ends and now 528 is painted black below the cab ends. The grey at either side of the cab end came right down to below the front of the cabs  In my opinion this small difference makes a big difference to the overall look of the livery on the 66. I think the black looks a lot better and smarter and the grey just looked out of place.

I'm afraid I don't "get" the two grey patches on the front which just are a jar to my eye. The livery doesn't seem to have any relation to the actual form of the loco.

Though nowadays that could be said of many liveries.........

I am talking about the old Powerhaul livery which was applied to 66504. This is a different variant to the Powerhaul livery displayed by 66528.

If you look at the cab their is a small rectangular patch of grey. One rectangle is where the loco number is and the other side is just plain grey. On 66504 the grey went all the way down to below where the lights are. It went to where the buffers and coupling is. This is now painted black on 66528 which I think looks a lot better as the grey on 504 just looked out of place.

I know what you mean about the liveries. I think the Powerhaul livery suits the 70s more but the livery doesn't look too bad in my opinion now on the 66 that the grey area (mentioned above) has been painted black.

That's the one!

I didn't like all of the grey on the cab ends. I just think that the grey was over-used on the cab ends and looked too much. At least the black looks smarter especially with a lot less grey on the cab ends. It looked shocking with 3/4 grey below the lights and then a small 1/4 black.

SUNDAY 66'S AT ACTON BRIDGE ON WCML

I decided to have a ride to Acton Bridge on the WCML early this morning with the Mrs and kids with a promise to call at the garden center on the way home.  There were 6 freights due in a 1 hour period if they all ran and on time.  I missed the Wigan Springs Branch to Crewe as it passed just as we were getting out of the car which was a Freightliner 66.  Here's what we did see which was dominated by DB Schenker 66's in EWS livery.

1st was 66171 on the Halewood Jaguar Cars in Liverpool to Southampton Docks

Next was 66074 from Preston Docks to Crewe

post-25512-0-62738000-1429461226_thumb.jpg

Then top and tailed was the Preston Fylde Jcn to Crewe with 66015 at the front and 66078 on the rear.

Also saw some sort of passenger working with two DRS 57's top and tailed.  Would have liked to have seen a 70 really but not bad for a hours stint.

Eccles Road

66721, Harry Beck, and 66756 on 6T71, 21:04, Whitemoor Yard L.D.C GBRF - Oulton Broad South (00:05) - infrastructure

passing at 22:23 at about 50mph

When I arrived at the station I was pleased, the lights had been replaced by brighter ones, I had my low light lens (a 50mm, f1.2) all I needed was the train to be checked at the "random red" (I call it that because some trains are checked even though there is nothing in front), meaning the train would trundle along at about 20mph but no - Cambridge PSB decided to give it a green :nono: so it went flying through, so I'm quite please with the photo under the circumstances.
