RMweb Gold tetsudofan Posted July 15, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 15, 2013 (edited) Pictures taken of the same loco about 25 years apart on different sides of the world: Back in 1968/1969 I was living and working (in a bank when banks were banks.....not what they are today!!) in Saigon, Vietnam. One weekend flew up to Dalat in the Central Highlands and found at the back of the Air Vietnam town terminal (previously the town's railway station) the loco shed with one of the ex-Furka Oberalp rack locos #31-204 slowing rusting away. Fast forward 25 years or so and what did I find on the Furka Steam Railway - #31-204 repatriated and preserved as #DFB 9!!!! When I visited the DFB I took with me a copy of the pictures taken in Vietnam.....and was lucky to get similar shots on the DFB. Am well pleased with the results. chaz
Another snap from that LNER Gala on the NYMR - an excellent weekend! Pity about the chocolate and cream livery on the Mk One's - not suited to this locomotive or its early BR blue. Judge Dread
Here goes nothing, oldest first, Class A1 "Bon Accord" now reduced to express goods work, slows a southbound one at Doncaster in about 1957. Then "King George V" about to leave Paddington on an Oxford express, December 4th. 1961. Class D49, "Morayshire" at the rear of Edinboro shed, Dalry Road in 1962 shortly after withdrawal for preservation. Now forward to 1963 and I found this loco at the rear of Hawick shed but sadly not awaiting preservation this time. Anything electric is good for me and this "Wessex" unit is bursting out from under the St. Mary Street bridge on final approach to Southampton Central. Finally for the "Shed" fans, my good friend ChrisH supplied this photo of 66504, northbound on an intermodal approaching St. Denys. chaz
Nice to see the Wessex unit in your photo', John. I remember those trainsets fondly - who would have thought that I would feel nostalgia for an EMU? Chaz

bike2steam
Southall shed was a place that at times could throw up the unexpected, such as locos off the Woodford Halse to Acton freights, by 1964 the unusual was getting rare until someone decided to transfer the last working small prairies to that shed for working ( mostly) the heavily (then) industrialised Brentford branch. Modellers note that straight (?)running plate. Nothing like the atmosphere of a dirty, filthy, smokey, dank steam shed - but great fun.
bike2steam
34034 has just come on shed at Nine Elms, one of 34's regular drivers was the late Reuben Hendicott who along with a few other drivers I got to know as I spent many Saturdays at Nine Elms in the last 2 years of steam. Reuben along with Gordon Hooper, and Gordon Porter were the 3 Nine Elms 'racers' who really brought out the best off the Bulleid pacifics after the re-signalling of the LSWR main-line to Basingstoke in 66. 20 years later I moved to Bournemouth, and by a million to one coincidence Reuben was my next door neighbour, a real character, he had many tales to tell,I wish I had wrote it all down, a few I can remember - one day, maybe another thread .
