South of 1E Posted July 12, 2013 Share Posted July 12, 2013 The decline of wagon load and load hauled parcel/passenger traffic has seen a massive decline in shunter turns across the network. I believe only Inverness/Penzance are the only terminus stations to still have limited shunter action, many of the surviving yards no longer have a grumbling 08/09 busying itself. Depot pilots survive but very few too. Be interesting to record and list this decline from happier days, yes the old Shunter duties booklets list 70/80's turns this is only half the story perhaps? 3 samples Watford Jn once had a pilot, lost in the late 70's use to trip up to Watford North Fort William once had a pilot duty doing station and yard work, lost in the mid 70's? Lost sometime in the early 90s I think A also recall being shunted back in the 80s at Preston when the Glasgow and Edinburgh trains were combined into one at said location. But you don't need them at terminus unless you are releasing a loco. When the management changed at EWS the boss an went nuts at the numbers of 08s sitting around and decreed all shunting would be done by mainline locos in. Future.... Rivercider Posted July 12, 2013 Share Posted July 12, 2013 In the 1970s and early 1980s there were 2 pilots at Bristol Temple Meads, the East End Pilot and the West End Pilot both with their semi permanently attached brake van. At that time is seemed impossible that large stations like that could ever do without one. Here is the Temple Meads West End Pilot 08951, in 1983 cars imported through Royal Portbury were road hauled to Bristol where they were loaded either in the motorail dock or in the yard at nearby Pylle Hill. 08951 has just shunted them from the motorail dock, I think this trainload were destined for Bathgate or Mossend, 5/7/83 08753 at Perth 17/6/83. cheers Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Poggy1165 Posted July 13, 2013 Share Posted July 13, 2013 There used to be a whole host of them in and around Manchester Piccadilly. As I recall they all had unofficial name plates. It's very sad (I think) that this aspect of traditional train working has almost entirely died out. You don't even see it on preserved lines. I am old enough to remember Crewe when the '08' was a Jinty doing the same job. And I guess that before that it would have been a Webb Special Tank.
