The specialist colours are more expensive, I swear by the Precision range, rusty rails, rail dirt, sleeper grime, weathered concrete, break dust, soot, oil leaking's and many many more Humberol metallic black and gun are always handy to have, Humberol track brown, any of the wide range of browns, greens, blacks, metallic range and more, the best answer is to have a visit to your model shop, and see what you can find, as has been said, don't be shy to try things like tester pots, artists paints and soft pastels all have there uses in weathering...

One thought for the grass, is to grind up a brown soft pastel on a nail file or emery board (on newspaper!) spray some cheap hairspray over the grass (a little at a tie is easier) and sprinkle some of the ground pastel powder over the grass, again, build up gradually, you can also get the effect of burnt grass and coal dust on ballast using a black pastel ground in a similar way...

Hope that gives you some ideas...

Sean

Good to see you've been having fun with your layout Will, which is coming along nicely BTW.

Have you considered crafters acrylics from the local art store. I use black, burnt umber, pewter grey all mixed to varying shades of grime and thinned with water, it sprays on nicely too! The bonus side apart from being cheep is that it washes off with warm water without leaving a trace!!

Regards Shaun.

Would you be even more jealous if I said that on my way back from school I regularly see a HST. Not quite as good as the 50s, but thankfully less GWR stuff, I'd have loved it in the 80s with class 37s and 50s. Thanks Bodgit, you too and good luck with the big project!

Hi Will, the layout looks really good!

Quick question, are you leaving the grass-free areas on the hills as they are and if so, is it just dark brown poster paint? If not, what are are you using, I need to do similar!

Thanks Matt, I haven't got round to doing the grass yet and I think the paint is bog standard poster paint; nothing special.

And for those of you who don't know, I've been invited to Warley!

That's great news!

So have I, with Orchard Road!

So, will see you there!

Nice locos. Have you had a chance to set up anything yet?

They could be weathered with some smoke coloured weathering powder, which you can wash off if you don't like it, so you can practise several times and no damage.

Thanks Jaz, the only thing I've managed to set up so far is a workbench with a cutting mat! As for weathering, I was thinking of handing them over to Callum (SDJR7F88) for weathering so they look nice and dirty for Warley! Got to save up my pocket money though first! :D

Would love to have a go at them for you! :thankyou: Hope you can start work on the layout again soon too! WSR Gala on the 29th too! 50/50 at the mo, but lets hope so! :locomotive:

Tell me if you can go and if so, I'll bring a loco (probably the 4mt) and a wagon to save on postage.

No problem! That would be super! Having a break from weathering at the mo, as you have seen on my topic I have another box from the guy. Including a Britannia (which I will most likely not do due to it being a tender drive), a Merchant Navy, a BR Department Coach in Dept Green and 4x flat Wagons. But sure I will give yours a go. :paint:
