mikeandnel
Can anyone advise me when the LBSCR began to put the illiterate mark on their rolling stock, and whether it was ever applied to any of their coaching stock Also the date that the practice ceased would be a help Thank you Michael

burgundy
Mike As far as I know, the illiterates mark or totem was never used on passenger stock. Ownership would have been clear from the lettering round the edge of the garter which contained the vehicle number. Goods vehicles wandered further off the home system and a number of companies took the view that a simple mark, that did not require reading skills, would be useful; as far as I know, Brighton employees were required to be literate. The reference given by Andi above is probably the best information, pending the release of a Brighton Livery Register. But, it reflects the last date for painting stock in the livery, so examples might still have been hanging around for up to a decade later. Best wishes Eric
