I have added photos of 56301 sitting in the sun at York yesterday at   http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/class56 Although the Fastline lettering has gone, the remainder of that fine livery remains in remarkably good condition. My understanding is that this loco is now owned by the "Class56Group" and hired to DRS.

I'll scan my other 56 photos soonish.

There are some cracking shots on this thread, its amazing to watch the class go from full strength to miserable rusty stored 'ghosts' and then make the recent come back, particularly seeing some locos in store a few years ago and now back at work. I missed the 56s first time around, so it's nice to get a second chance!

Earlier in the year 56087 brought a train of engineers wagons down to Westbury from Crewe

I actually saw this working pass through mossley (the next village along from greenfield). I was in a lesson at primary school at the time. the classroom overlooked the line. this was the first class 56 'spotted' on the route by myself and classmates

I have added to my collection of class 56 photographs, some are when they were new. Please see

http://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/class56

A possibly interesting one is 56036 only a few weeks old (mid September 1978) and sporting the large logo livery http://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/class56/e76a9aaca

As others have commented, it is nice to see some of them rise Phoenix like; the livery permutations are amazing.

By the way, did they work in Scotland. I don't have any photos of them there - which doesn't mean much, but as you can see from my wagon photos I did hang around some of the main freight yards in Scotland during the 1980s and early 90s.

I hope of interest.

They sure did Paul, but took their time getting there. This from Class 56 Group stalwart Jim Nisbet's site:

"Class 56s first started appearing regularly in Scotland in 1990 and spent the next ten years working MGR, cement and Enterprise services before EWS decided to concentrate the fleet elsewhere towards the end of 1999. The year 2000 saw very little Grid activity north of the border but in 2001 the Class were once again making regular trips into Scotland, although during 2002 the number of visits dwindled, particularly with the loss of cement traffic to Freightliner."

Motherwell had an allocation in these latter years.

Hi Paul,

As Classix said they did indeed work to scotland in the early 90's. They used to take over from class 26's on MGR trains from Blindwells at Millerhill and I believe they also used to work to Thornton Yard for the same reason.

Hope that helps

I can't find any in my collection actually working in Scotland, but I do have this panoramic view of Millerhill on a Saturday afternoon in April 1992 and there are three 56s visible on the extreme right.

They are 56082, 086 and 088.

56028 was also present but is not visible in this photo.

  • 2 weeks later...

We had a 56 round this way today, 56312 in a fresh coat of DCR grey

IMG_7610-56312-0Z56-XL.jpg

56312 emerges from the mist at Langley Burrell working 0Z56 Westbury - Westbury via Merehead, Frome and Swindon. It is believed to be in preparation for a flow of spoil from Merehead quarry by DCR. Despite the weather, a Grid through Chippenham was a nice birthday treat! 24/9/13

Nice pic Jo. I was recently sent a nocturnal shot of her at Derby, the platform lights off the high gloss finish hurt my eyes!

Nameplate pays homage to Jeremiah Dixon of County Durham, surveyor of the Mason-Dixon line in the USA BTW.

Dear Dave and others,

Thanks for the responses to what was rather an aside. My wanderings to Scotland largely ended a long time ago and it was noticeable that I hadn't seen any 56s up there. From all of the replies it appears to have taken quite a long time before they became popular up there.

Regards

Paul
