And I take it that is you at the far end of the bridge in this shot? (Above the cab of 158742)

Yes, that would be me. I noticed your image just before I posted mine earlier.  Small world, full of co-incidences.

This week DCR has been running a trial train from Westbury to Southampton carrying recycled ballast for use as Type 1 aggregate in the building trade.

It's been the same  locos all week (I think DCR only have this pair active at the moment anyway?), 56103 and 56091.

On the third day of operation, 26th June, here's 6Z91 Westbury - Southampton Up Yard (Bevois Park) passing Norton Bavant on the approach to the Wylye Valley, working hard and making a racket.

Does anyone else have a picture a 56 working a stone train in the 1970s or 80s at the same location I wonder?

I don't think this the same place but very similar looking, i was wild camping back in '87 in Wiltshire & Somerset, i turned down this quiet looking single track country lane to park up and have a kip and came across this bridge and took this pic' it was'nt that far from Westbury from memory.

Hi,no unfortunately it wasn’t ready it had some trial runs I think the weekend before but it had problems, shame was looking forward to seeing it,hopefully nothing too serious, somebody from the ELR said it was something to do with moisture in the electrics somewhere causing it to trip out, will probably take time to nail it down I suppose.

cheers

56042 the oddball with class 58 bogies

To be pedantic, no. 56042s bogies were known as CP1, whereas the 58s had CP3 bogies. A development from one to the other but certainly different bogies to the rest of the 56 fleet.

Yes David as you say, it makes a nice change after several weeks of 70816.

Here're the pair further along the Calder Valley passing through Brighouse in the gloom and steady rain.

I can't remember if I've posted this photo before on RMweb (apologies if this is a repeat), but some may find it interesting.

3 unidentified 56s under construction at Doncaster. I was fortunate to work in the BR Telephone Exchange (on the Grainbank for those who know where that is) between 1978 and 1985. Very interesting times with the Doncaster resignalling, new class 56 builds followed by the class 58 builds, as well as all the other usual "Plant" stuff.

As the "Plant" was very busy during this period, as with most large organisations, there were plenty of mini-reorganisations of varying degrees that involved office/personnel moves and the like which required 'phone moves, new 'phones, etc. A fairly regular source of weekend work for us (in addition to all the resignalling works). When we had weekend work in the Plant coming up, it was the usual practice after lunch on a Friday to go and "suss out" the job so we could ensure we had all the correct tools/materials to get the job done. The actual "sussing" would usually take no longer than about 30 minutes, however, as the TO (Technician Officer) was in the lead, we always seemed to take a circuitous route to the actual "work site", probably because he went to school with what seemed like half the workforce and he kept stopping to have a chat with most of them, it took us about 3 hours to go round the Plant. Not that I was complaining! I was getting paid to walk around the various "shops" (Fab, Erecting, Paint, and numerous other little gems) and be totally in awe watching others at their work - some fantastic skills were on display. Anyway, enough reminiscing, here's the photo.

Nice post Ian, all I can tell you is that they're early builds 031-055.

Did you know Hugh Parkin at all?

C6T.

Hi Classsix,

Did Hugh work at the Plant? If so, I'm afraid not. I knew very few people who worked there (unlike my TO), other than recognizing a few faces around town when out shopping, or the occasional face now and again in the pub.

I believe so. He donated a huge amount of images to the Class 56 Group for use in our newsletter. Everything Grid related from the build of 56031 right up to major exams in privatisation days for the shadow and thence EWS FOC's.

Naturally us mortals tend to think anyone who worked there knew everyone else not realising what a huge enterprise the site was!

Another from my "work archive". An UID 56 approaching Brocklesby. Apologies, but as well as no id for the 56, unfortunately I don't have a date either. All I can say it was during my Railtrack days, so somewhere between 01 Apr 1994 and 03 Oct 2002.
