Were the tracks to the left lightly used at this time as it seems weird how the sidings look less overgrown than the main running line.

I'd imagine so yes, by the time I signed the road in 2006 the layout had been completely relaid and very much simplified, the sidings and 'box are now long gone, the mainline is now single line and there are now houses where the sidings used to be. One of our Shunters is ex-Coalville and knows a lot about the branch, next time I see him I'll tap him up for more info.

As an aside, almost any location on the 'branch' would make for an excellent layout.

One from over 6 years ago first

One from a few years ago, I must have known there was a 56 on 6M50 Westbury - Bescot otherwise I'd have stayed at home! Making a quick dash down the country lanes, once I arrived 56302 could be heard for a couple of miles as it ran along the embankment past Langley Burrell. Seen approaching Dauntsey bank, the loaded autoballasters will have given it something to think about on the climb up towards Wootton Bassett.

Followed by a recent one.

Not a cloud in the sky, baking temperatures and a little more freedom to meet friends in open locations. What could possibly go wrong? Cows on the line at Bassett, leading to the target (ROG 20s on the scrap to Newport) diverting via Kemble and everything else running late! Still it was good to sit in the sun and have a catch up with my mate, almost like the pre lockdown days. As a record, it's 56103 on a rather late 5Q21 Wembley - Barton Hill with a pair of Chiltern Mk3s in tow at Acton Turville. Oh what it could have been...

Never noticed this before, but 56127 appears to have gained a jumbo allocation sticker at some point, but one side only....

Photos taken during 2006/7.

One recent one of a 56 from me. 103 again, thanks to a tip off from a friend at work who saw the light loco leaving Bristol for Canton. I hadn't realised what this was, disregarded it as a tamper or some such!

In true class 56 style, 56103 could be heard long before it was seen, here passing Ram Hill Business Park at Coalpit Heath whilst working 6Z56 Cardiff Canton - Acton Lane Sidings with 9 JRA wagons. Looking at the fresh paint on axleboxes, handrails etc the wagons appear to be fresh off maintenance.

I had a pair of 56s in the yard last night, pics linked from Flickr so you can click for a bigger version.

56096 stands in the MHD (Materials handling depot) at Westbury, as the driver moves 56094 off the fuel point before coming onto the traffic on the adjacent road. Once attached to the traffic, it's pull forward before setting back to join up on top with 096. Brake test, and that's another top and tail train put together. 6C20 for Malvern Wells was the train, the second train of a busy few hours for me, it sounds so quick and easy when you write it down!

50361243047_9304476114_b.jpg56094 + 56096 6C20 Westbury by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

It's not every day we get a 56 or two on a ballast out of Westbury, and here's a slightly different angle on it, no doubt views from the station will appear too as there were plenty of cameras present. Having come down from Donny as 0C20, 56094 sits in Westbury MHD (the track recycling bit of Westbury) atop 6C20 for Malvern Wells. 56096 was tail gunner on this job, with a solo 66 each on 6C21 and 6C22 to the same job. Timing on getting the train ready was lucky, 5 minutes earlier the sky was white, 5 minutes later it was dark! After this, it was time to have the DB 66s from Didcot in to the Up Yard off the back road and sort them out. One to stable, the other for 6W02. Busy couple of hours for me!
