Class 20 "chopper" new and old photos...

Recommended Posts

This is not my photo, the copyright holder seems to be one Paul Miller, but it is one of the very rare pictures showing two 20s actually working cab to cab. The text says they were returning light from Kings Lynn, but I have not found a record of their loaded working.

EDIT: Ooops, forgot to add the numbers: they are 20177 and 20163

Regarding the 20's running nose first - I have to say my brother and I always thought we were partly responsible for this (even though we were only about 8 at the time) - we went to March depot on the Sunday for a look around and said to the foreman that we were going to watch the class 20's on the coal train the next day (kings Lynn - Foxton). There were 2 pairs of 20's there and he asked which pair we wanted to see - as one was in railfreight we asked for that pair and went down to see them in the Monday morning and this is what turned up after 20163 had failed-

Also on with regard to 20034 with full set of sandboxes being rear in the 80's I've got a photo of 20034 with 20133 at March depot both with a full set of sandboxes -

Here is the "Chipmens" Weedkiller train running along the North Wales coast 1993....

I think that's the Fison's (later Agrevo) weedkiller train. The Chapman's train had a ex-SR bogie van.

The Fison's train was mainly used in the North and Chipman's in the south.

Plenty of info here

Cheers,

Mick

Spent the morning scanning most of my Class 20 photos - sadly some show the ravages of time and 'chuck it in a box' storage and the notebooks with dates and locations are long-gone. I'm pretty certain all date between 1984 and 1994 and I've added locations where I'm certain.

There may be a few more to come, need to check a couple of HDDs to see if any previously scanned ones from when I had a fotopic are still around

Anyways... enjoy!

Back in the "good old days" here I am leaning out of the window as 20159 + 20196 round the curve at Firsby on 29.5.82 with a Skegness bound train. Until 1981 it was possible to get a Deltic on a diverted train via the GN & GE Joint then kip in the waiting room for a pair of Choppers to Skeggy! On one occasion the waiting room was locked so I slept on a park bench.....

Another class 20 from East lancs Railway   green class 20087 :locomotive:

attachicon.gif20087 east lancs.jpg

Nice model pic  :jester:  - Green 20 on blue/grey Mk2 stock with IC liveried Mk3 next to it, as well as a water tower, passing through an implausibly short tunnel with a sign that isn't vertical -  it deserves to be in this thread

And you've forgotten to fix the headcode discs that were supplied in the detail pack.

Cheers,

Mick
