Class 20 "chopper" new and old photos...

Recommended Posts

Some of the negs on that film have a bit of a green cast, so I wasn't really sure about the livery.

I may have some notes somewhere to shed some light on the ID of the second 20 above. Don't hold your breath though.

Looking again at the scan, it could possibly be 20173 or 20175 or 20178 (i.e. a rounded double-storey last digit, and not very fat 3rd and 4th digits), but it wouldn't stand up in court.

An unusual but welcome working from Brandon yesterday when a shortage of locos at DCR necessitated a hire in - see here for the 60 hauled loaded train arriving.

The empty wagons had been left at Brandon and 20901/118 were hired to take them to Chaddesden, this meant the 20s arrived at Brandon, dragged the wagons from the sidings and then they have to run all the way to Ely, a distance of approx. 15 miles, to change lines and return back to the other end - ie they run round the wagons in a 30 mile move ! - I believe this is due to a fault with the signalling as the signalling exists to allow the more sensible use of the crossover, indeed I've photographed an engine using it, but there is obviously something fairly seriously wrong otherwise it would have been fixed and it's been faulty for a good few years now. My car was in for it's MOT so I missed the arrival of the engines to move the wagons into position however the Mrs agreed to drive me there for the run round move and the departure of the main train. The news of the 20s brought out a lot of local enthusiasts, it was good to meet a lot of faces from the local Facebook "gen" group.

Coupled up and ready to go - the heat haze distorts the image unfortunately.

Note the GPLS to the left of the loco, which should be used for the run round rather than Ely and back
