Class 20 "chopper" new and old photos...

Recommended Posts

The 20s are indeed 20047 with 20013 with 1N35 10.18 Scarborough to Newcastle in tow on Saturday 31st August 1985.

I can't thank you enough B Exam!

If our paths ever cross, let me know and there'll be a couple of pints for you.

Out of interest, (and if you can disclose), how did you know/find out the info?

Thanks again.

Sean.

I'm a bit of a Class 20 anorak...

No, I can remember 20047 working out of Scarborough in the 80's, so I just looked through my Class 20 passenger lists until I found it. 1985 was a good year for 20s working the Newcastle train to York.

Don't worry about the pints, I'm just happy to help.

An excellent third picture of those 20s as it shows various staple wagons from the period at Toton.  I believe all of them are available from either Bachmann or Hornby.

The one possible exception is the 4-wheeled 'Catfish' ballast hopper, just in front of the SR bogie brake; it is available from Cambrian, as a kit, however.

HI Simon,

That will do fine!

As long as it was pre headlight and post TOPS with the Tablet catcher recess filled in...

Thanks

20128 Was never fitted with a tablet catcher recess. Its former number was D8050 before TOPS number. With D8000 taking the 20050 number in TOPS, D8050 was added to the end of the disc headcode build after 20127. This meant D8128 being shunted to the end of the headcode box build and becoming 20228 under TOPS. The tell tale sign is the smaller cabside windows. Tablet catcher locos had deeper windows. Note: 20115 & 20122 received smaller windows after collision damage.

Tablet catcher recess locos were D8028-D8034 (20028-034) and D8070-D8127 (20070-127).

Regarding headlights, 20128 received its headlights in June 1993 when released from overhaul at Doncaster works for BRT.

Rounding Caddaford Curve on the SDR - 2012 (Presumably D8110)

A popular place to take photos, but somewhere I've never quite managed to get right.

On a side note, I was passing through Derby a couple of weeks ago (Friday 12th Sept) and there were 8 class 20s in various liveries sat in the station, with 4 barrier wagons.

20-20-Wagon-Wagon-20-20-20-20-Wagon-Wagon-20-20

I believe that they were 'off', but class 222s seem quite well insulated to sound! Can anyone shed some light on that?

There was a 9th 20 in the yard, presumably something to do with the open day weekend.

Hi B Exam,

Thanks for the info.

I bought a Bachmann CL20 128 second hand and it has the tablet catcher recess.

So - it must be a renumber but wrongly done.

Possibly it was a 20 028 and someone did a simple renumber without checking the facts.

Thanks

Hi B Exam,

I've asked the question to the seller.

Yes - this was 20 028 with Tablet Catcher recess renumbered to 20 128.

Thanks

Always happy to help.

Another curiosity is 20103 which has odd tail lamps on the cab end. 2nd man's side has a as built class 20 tail light, whereas the drivers side is from a class 31. It gained it sometime between 1978 and 1982.

The plough blades look very similar to the ones attached to the Network Rail "Beilhack" ploughs that are still going to this day some 30 years later. :locomotive:

There's a great picture of one in use on Flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/eastfield/15691565590/

Cheers

A couple of shots from 30 years ago:

post-15533-0-58548800-1417279933_thumb.jpg

20002 and 20114 at Carstairs. This was on 14th Jan 1984, when I was travelling on an Adex from Birmingham to Edinburgh. The wires had come down between Crawford and Carstairs so, after a lengthy delay, our Class 86 was dragged by (I think) a pair of 20s.  As I recall, this meant that we had less than an hour in Edinburgh before our departure back south. I had a friend with me who was not interested in trains, and he was not impressed, having been looking forward to sampling the cultural delights of Edinburgh.

20168 at Bescot, 15th Feb 1984. I had cycled through freezing fog from Northfield, and my hands were so cold I could barely operate the camera.
