I think its preserved.

I assume the extra grilles are to make up for the lack of engine room ventilation dur to the presence of the extra tanks.

the drs ones have an extra door of grilles where normally there is a solid one which is the main way into the engine room.I think BR onlt converted one loco with extra tanks, but as they normally ran in pairs converting one seems a bit odd as it would still have to go to fuel points to refuel its mate

found this piccie of a class 20 passing through pen-y-ffordd in my collection

not noticed it before but it has extra tanks and bodyside grilles on the doors

whats all that about then?

20084 Was fitted with 3 extra fuel tanks, trippling the fuel capacity for the loco. The extra tanks were fitted in front of the cab on either side and in the nose end above the compressor and exhauster.

As a door lost its grilles on either side due to the new tanks, the lost grilles were added to the bodyside doors to aid ventilation.

20084 was the only on converted by BR. Hunslet Barclay fitted 20902/903 and 20905/906 with two extra tanks in front of the cab to a slightly larger capacity. They obmitted the nose compartment tank as access to the compressor and exhauster meant the fuel tank had to be removed.

DRS fitted all the 20/3s with the extra 3 fuel tanks.

The first 5 DRS 20s originally only had the two side tanks the nose one was fitted later

The hunslet barclay 20s were strange the side tanks weren't in the fuel system, they were used for topping up the main tanks. I'm not sure if they have been altered by HNRC

when i used to go down the cambrian with drs 20s you had to carry an RT3973HAW form (heavy axle weight) for 20306 upwards due to the extra nose tank being fitted, there were a number of bridges you had to slow down over

my dads picture of 20084 is quite a catch then!

I trust people don't mind if I intrude a little bit in to this thread - this posting that is to do with Class 20's, but not photos!

Over on this thread I am looking to improve the slow running of my Lima Class 20. OK, I know the model's old, but it's what I've got and rather than sell it and buy a Bachmann Class 20 in green (which means, from what I can see at the moment, a respray and possibly body mods as well to back date it) I want to get my Lima job running slowly.

I'm hoping other Class 20 owners may feel the same way, hence this post.

Thanks and I won't intrude any more!

Phil

This caught me on the hop a little whilst out shopping today. I heard the distinctive sound of the engine and just managed to catch 20901 at the rear of some sort of recording train (listed as the 562K 12:50 Littlehampton to Tonbridge). Sadly I missed the front loco...

Fitting it should be 20901, and the location being Horsham, as the old Chipmans sidings were just the other side of the station. Apologies for the less the great quality of the pictures...taken in a rush on my phone.

20117+20095 with 27014 in the Bay platform at Dumfries 8/12/1984. I believe this area is now filled in and is a Car Park.

Once loco hauled trains on the GSWR finished there was no reason to go to Dumfries anymore but it was a nice station and holds some good memories I must go and take some pictures of the coal trains passing.
