Specials, railtours and excursions on Cornwall's branches & mainline

Additionally the steam tours to Par ARE shown as running again this year although I suppose it depends on certain circumstances at St Blazey?!

It would do, if these were still issues, but I'm not aware of any unresolvable problems.

Here is a list of some forthcoming excursions:-

17th April:- Cornish Riviera Statesman. Leeds to Penzance. 2 x WCRC 47/57 (Statesman Rail).

19th April:- Cornish Riviera Statesman. Penzance to Leeds. 2 x WCRC 47/57 (Statesman Rail).

28th April:- Great Briton VIII (Day 1). Exeter to Par. Steam 34067 & 70000 (Railway Touring Co).

29th April:- Great Briton VIII (Day 2). Penzance to Bristol Temple Meads.  Steam 34067 & 70000 (Railway Touring Co).

2nd May:- Plymouth / Laira rare lines. FGW Class 08. (PLEG / BLS charity tour).

20th May:- Cornish Explorer. Chester to Penzance and return. 2 x WCRC 47/57 (Compass Tours).

30th May:-  The Eden Project. London Paddington to Par and return. DBS 66/67 (UK Railtours).

27th June:- Mazey Day Cornishman. Tame Bridge Parkway to Penzance and return. DBS 66. (Pathfinder Tours).

It is a shame there are no "heritage" diesels especially for Mazey Day although more tours may be added. I suppose a WCRC 47 might fall into that category.

Additionally the steam tours to Par ARE shown as running again this year although I suppose it depends on certain circumstances at St Blazey?!

Dates shown are:- 14th, 21st & 28th June, 5th & 12th July, 16th & 30th August & 6th September. Motive Power unconfirmed but from a pool of 6023, 34067 & 34046. (Railway Touring Co).

ALL INFORMATION SUBJECT TO CONFIRMATION. The operators websites (shown in brackets) are the best places to look for any more details.

Given the news emerging today concerning West Coast Railway Co, some of these tours may be in doubt. :-(

The Great Briton VIII tour which is heading for Cornwall next week is running. Sadiy there will be no steam loco visiting Cornwall though as the workings in and out of Penzance are booked for a DBS Class 66.

The steam loco No 70000 is only running as far as Plymouth.

That's really sad; just what is the main reason?  The mag reports are very vague!

Brian.

The WCRC track access suspension by NR.

(If you haven't seen yet, let me just say that its a huge can of worms that we cant go into here but it is on another temporarily locked thread, Brian.

A recent set of pictures from specials to grace the Duchy..

Apl 25th / 26th

The VSOE set visited Penzance to run around on Sat 25th & Sun 26th. The photos were taken on the 26th 67005 & 67026.

Apl 28th / 29th

The GB8 railtour reached Penznace, down on 28th & returning next day. 66122 was the loco, deputising for the booked steam traction. The train was seen on the down at Buckshead tunnel (with land owners permission), and Carlyon Bay on the 29th.

The cutting at Buckshead has recently been cleared of vegetation, and the flowers have got hold straight away!

Well chaps, Mazey day looms and sadly, only one railtour this year. What a contrast to years gone by with 3 or 4 trains being josstled about in between the busy booked departures at Penzance.

Pathfinder tours are doing the honours with a special from Tame Parkway hauled by a class 66. It is due into Penzance at 11.39, and departs at 16.10

No doubt full details will be on RTT so no need to post schedules anymore!! YAY

Cheers - weather forecast a bit glum looking at the moment, buit could improve (or worsen)!!

I was told this morning that a planned steam hauled special to Par booked for the weekend is not running due to the risk of lineside fires after recent hot weather. Shame that a replacement diesel locomotive could not be found.

Ironic as well that there were thunderstorms in parts of mid-Cornwall earlier today.

Yes, the whole line of route from Bristol seems to have had a dousing today, with more possibly tomorrow night, but you can't just cancel and reinstate these trains at such short notice. A decision has to be taken and then adhered to. Quite often the punters on trips like this would prefer to cancel and have a refund, allowing them to book again for a later date, rather than have diesel haulage, so we have to respect WCR's decision to cancel, rather than provide a diesel.

The Royal Duchy has had a rather torrid 2015!

The last week's special got into trouble on the return working at Hemerdon, and this weeks steam foray with 60009 Union of South Africa, didnt make it into Cornwall. There was some action with WCR class 47/8 47832 - former WR loco by chance, brought the beleaguered train in to Par, and the passengers enjoyed a few hours in the Duchy, as the departure time was extended.

Here are some pictures in the Par area:

Happy a happy hour at Forder Viaduct with the family and 2 year old grandson, waiting for 'Deeesul' to come through.

Had to go In The end as it was bed time, but not before we saw a train or two and made two of us very happy indeed.

Loco no 70000 Britannia should work the 0850 Bristol to Par on Sunday 6th September. Train is due into Par at 1400. Engine and support coach then take a trip over to St Blazey and later return back to Par.The return special then leaves Par at 1745 back to Bristol.

Let us hope that the day goes off without any problems given the recent events affecting Tangmere (at Hemerdon) and UofSA (at Newton Abbot)!

Well - first update of 2016:

Jan 30th / 31st: Engineers possession Par - Truro. 6 or more trains are working in the blockade to relay near Trenance. Some of the trains will be going to Penzance to run around as there is porecious time to accomplish this at Truro between the branch & terminating shuttles.

No firm info yet, but all three FOCs Colas / FLHH & DBS expected to make an appearance.

April 23rd - heard on Radio Cornwall that the Belmont VSOE doing the Truro / St Austell pick ups again over the weekend

Well, nobody said about a Duchess on Cornwall for the first time ! Missed that one... !!

Yes, one thing I do miss about retirement from NR is the fact that I don't get this kind of information first hand any longer.

The weekend of 17th / 18th Sept saw two special trains in action. One steam hauled, one diesel.

6201 Princess Elizabeth worked down into Penzance under the cover of darkness Saturday evening, was turned on Sunday via Laira and worked back East on Tuesday 20th. The diesel used in additional duties was WCR 47746. The turning move was pictured on Coombe viaduct on Sun 18th Sept.

Also on Sat 17th, D1015 worked into Penzance running as D1071 Western Renown (on one side only). It worked west through murky conditions, but I was lucky to catch a burst of sunlight with the return working at Restormel.
