4 wheel vs 8 wheel wagons?

I have the opportunity to pick up some German prototype models. I'm trying to figure period equipment. Are 4 wheeled wagons, (tank, van, etc) still in use today or is most rolling stock 8 wheeled?

I'm considering a 319 diesel and an E94 electric. I know they're periods apart so I'll be picking two separate sets of stock for a shuttling layout.

Thanks for any advice and info offered,

Dave

Have a look at this site for starters; Anton makes several photographic safaris to mainland Europe every year. German-owned stock can be identified by the country code 80, but within Germany, you'll find stock from everywhere else in Europe:-

From observation elsewhere in Europe, four-wheel stock is getting rarer, but there are still things like specialised tanks.

Brian,

Wow that's a great site. Thanks it's just what I need. It will make my choice of rolling easier. As this is going to be a small switching layout (1' x ~15') I won't need a lot of rolling stock so some of the older stuff will mix with the new stuff. I chose the locomotives because they were available at the shop I'm helping to price "foreign" stock. They're older Roco with early versions of loksound installed. I have found info about a couple of E94s still in use and the RENFE 319 just caught my eye and is easy to find on the world wild web.

Again thanks for the great photo source.

Hi Dave,

may I suggest you take a look at my photos of Maschen marshalling yard from June this year? All photos are hi-res so you can zoom in and study the stock in detail.

By the way, 4w tank wagons as well as E94 electrics are still in revenue earning service these days.

Kind regards

Felix

Wow Felix, fantatic pictures!!!!!!!!!!!  I'm on my windows machine in my shop and they are showing perfectly.  Thanks for the link to your photo collection.  Now I just have to learn what I'm looking at as I am a novice German railway modeller.  Your photos should help a lot.

Again danke

Not to belabor this topic but Felix's photos are amazing.  The Maschen yard is gigantic.  I used Google maps to find where it is in Germany and the yard is so big that it shows up early on the map before you zoom in.  As stated in the wikipedia article on the yard, its the biggest in Europe and its 2nd in the world behind Bailey yard in Nebraska.

Again thanks Felix.

Dave
