There has been almost no progress on Olympia over the last week or two. Health issues with the M.I.L who needs regular visits and the fact it’s so hot have not helped.

A nose in the August issue of Back Track at work and a nice article by a former signaller at Olympia.

Tut, tut, Mr G. I'm sure that he would have been a signalman.

I agree…..but it’s been years of calling them signallers at work…..help I’ve been indoctrinated!

Yesterday I attended the first NGS Yorkshire area group meeting since lockdown. My first meeting since March 2020! Nice to to see lots of familiar faces again, a little bit of normality.

The back wall of the row of shops got made in between chatting. I’ll post some pictures later.

We are off to spend a 2019 Christmas present later today, lunch at Hotel du Vin in Harrogate.

I’m hoping the portions will be big enough at HdV that Betty’s isn’t needed…..and the Sister in Law is not on duty so no discount!

The rear of the parade of shops…..as per the parrot sketch the walls are just resting!  Walls should get painted tomorrow and windows added as well as correcting the height of the L bit of wall. That will leave the fire walls and roof access to finish them off.

The extra walls have now had a coat of paint and windows added. They are just propped up at the moment.

The Sweeney are cruising by as Jack, George and Bill are looking for their breakfast!

The Granada is 3D printed by Redandy767 on eBay…….it’s had spot lights added ( good old PECO track pins ) Painted approximately the right colour, details added with Posca paint pens and some paint with a fine brush.

The rear of the parade of shops has now got the walls fitted, details to pick out then weathering.

I also got six flag poles produced for Olympia way. These are just two sizes of brass tube soldered together and a blob of superglue on the top before being sprayed with white primer. Now then flags…………

A little delivery from  Machine Mart today. Small desktop vacuum base vice with rubber jaws, a set of tweezers and 150 miniature drill bits….they were just £15.59……I probably won’t snap any now!

Andy,

This is looking brilliant mate.

I have 1 question on the stock on the layout, and it may have been asked before but I can't remember nor find it, where did you get the Interfrigo Refrigerated van from??

Oh and by the way, just bought your book on the MIdland Region and an excellent tome it is too, my only comment is that for some reason photographers seem to concentrate on the West Coast Mainline when referring to the Midland, when the Midland is 'traditionally' the line from St.Pancras North through Leicester and on to Derby. I don't suppose you have any photos from that route do you?? Say enough for a 2nd edition concentrating on that route?? :D:D:D

Kind Regards

Neal.

Hi Neal the Interfrigo van along with the Transfesa ones are scratchbuilt.

Thank you for the comments about the book. Book wise the publishers have the next one which is basically GBTT table 51 the NE-SW and NW-SE routes.

I am just finishing off the last one which focuses on the West London Line. After that nothing planned.

You can access most of my pictures and others that haven’t appeared in the books at  https://andygibbs.zenfolio.com

There is a search facility that should pick up tagged locations or loco numbers etc. As I had relatives in Nottingham the Midland was my route of choice, my late Uncle also took lots of photos, some appear in the books. The rest can be found in the Tony Lower gallery .

Not much progress over the last week as the M.I.L. Is still still suffering from after effects of the stroke and a fall that that put her back in hospital for a week. Three days work in the shop has helped.

One project I’ve had sitting around for years is an old Triang Minic friction drive bus. This was rebuilt by the apprentices at Brighton, Hove and District into an open top bus and painted for the No17 seafront route. My Dad worked at BH&D and acquired it for me back in the 1960s. Sometime in the 1970s I repainted it badly in green with a five inch brush! Several house moves later it’s got a bit battered so I’ve finally started stripping in back to the metal and knocking the dents out and resoldering the handrails.

It’ll get repainted in cream. I have already have some 1/43 scale BH&D fleet names and suitable destination blind decals too.

Second Yorkshire NGS meeting tomorrow. I’m taking a couple of Olympia boards with me to work on. I’ll get some photos taken there as I will be able to get to the parts I can’t normally reach.

An enjoyable day in Heworth at the Yorkshire NGS meeting. I took a couple of boards from Olympia and despite the chatting got some work done too.
A couple of drivers eye views.

A well earned Sunday lunch out at the Fauconberg Arms in Coxwold today………very rare roast beef, superb. A ‘slight’ detour on the way home to the railway at Gilling. This is a huge 5 and 7 inch railway, well worth the visit if you are in the area…..especially the Mainline running weekends.

The bus has now gained some undercoat, the friction drive has been oiled and greased. Walking into work tomorrow will include a diversion via Halfords to get a suitable cream rattle can.

The Triang Minic bus has now gained two coats of Ford Ivory it’s decals and various bits of black paints. I need some chrome silver paint for the radiator and headlights before a coat of varnish to finish it off.

The two baseboards that went to NGS meet have been on there sides since. DCC Buss feeds now all soldered and shrink wrapped.

Part of the con rail became unsoldered….so that has been repaired. A resupply of cable hangers for the District line have arrived and have now been fitted  and that’s one job finished.

The facia has been fitted and a start made of painting this. It’s the same colour as the walls of the room behind the layout. It’s called Pigeon!

I'm sure I had one of these back in the 1960s. Though my one had a plastic body rather than metal, and the friction drive didn't work.

I wonder what happened to it?

My car is not that colour when the pigeons have done with it.

When I was very little, I used to call the number 17 buses Harold Hare buses (after my favourite comic) rather than open air buses.
