RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted October 25, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 25, 2013 Today I received Hornby's October e-newsletter. It's October 25. It would make more sense for this to be titled November. Instead it just feels like it's been delayed, much like their stock list I guess. Well it's in October isn't it. Trouble is we've got used to model railway mags coming out with cover dates that seem more related to the following month or occasionally the one after that! valeofyork
Well it's in October isn't it. Trouble is we've got used to model railway mags coming out with cover dates that seem more related to the following month or occasionally the one after that! Try computer magazines - they have reached the ridiculous situation of the issue published in October being labelled 'December' (and most of them are the same as none of them want to look out of date). bigherb
Well it's in October isn't it. Trouble is we've got used to model railway mags coming out with cover dates that seem more related to the following month or occasionally the one after that! I still haven't got used to it, the amount of times I've bought one I've already got because I couldn't remember the the cover picture.
robmcg
Can we expect a flood of arrivals in the next 6 weeks? I certainly hope it will be a good Christmas for Hornby, I particularly look forward to seeing pictures of the Great Gathering engines from actual ordinary buyers! The possible arrival of the Duke of Gloucester before Christmas is exciting too, and reminds me of other releases in previous years when such events spread into the late-December-early January period. Fingers crossed. (and yet you would THINK that the shippers knew where the relevant containers were right now)
Stanley Melrose
Comment from the box-shifter that I visited on Saturday morning was that DoG would not materialise until 2014 whereas the Bachmann 2-4-2T would arrive within the next two weeks. I didn't dare ask about the J11. We shall see. . . . Stan. robmcg
I am looking forward to BR 'Glastonbury Abbey' arriving in a week. Approximately. Hopefully... Until then I shall enjoy models I have already purchased, including many recently bought second-hand, because it is my expectation that prices will rise considerably in the next 1-3 years for super-detail models at least. leavesontheline
It would certainly raise a chuckle (with me anyway!) if the R6644 Hornby 2013 wagon slipped into 2014! I wonder would they discount it then?
Ozexpatriate
It would certainly raise a chuckle (with me anyway!) if the R6644 Hornby 2013 wagon slipped into 2014! I wonder would they discount it then? The people who buy such things will buy it anyway to have the 'set' irrespective of when it becomes available. If it slipped into 2014, Hornby could raise the price and the demand wouldn't change.
robmcg
Instead of buying any of the Great Gathering , today I bought this; a first foray for me into weathered A4s...
robmcg
and this... not to mention an older model, early 2000s, sympathetically weathered, I wonder how the unrebuilt Bulleids would be received in today's market? With a plethora of parts to be fitted by the owner including 6 white route code discs and the very flimsy front steps and external brake rods. note; a couple of these pics already very slightly modified. There are few releases for November, and I await an official notice from Margate to tell us which of the above will miss Christmas and arrive in 2014. We retailers need to let our customers know what Santa will not be bringing them! I take this all with a pinch of salt as I don't think I will be visiting my nearest model shop on Christmas Day! Happy Modelling from Mr Grumpy.
robmcg
That's a very large number to arrive during December. I would love to know which factories or subcontractors have supplied the models, which must surely 'exist' in boxes and containers in numbers by now, and whether Hornby have any 'handle' on the whereabouts of relevant containers. It occurs to me that a forum like this can bring about a lot of hopes and expectations which may not have been so keenly felt in the days before the internet, but then the many and various delays which have happened since Kader went bust have not been very effectively dealt with, except offering 'hoped-for' arrivals, which have mostly been quite unfulfilled. That said, Hornby is not a very large company by toymaker standards and it still surprises me that they can produce the few models currently arriving, at low prices by European standards, even if some detail is wrong and quality control isn't perfect. As Tony Wright alluded to, the cost of a kit or scratch built model of comparable standard would likely be in four figures. I know this sounds like yet another apology for Hornby's errors but I do not excuse the wrong number of spokes and or other errors in the Star, I simply think we are lucky to have a commercial manufacturer who has the will and apparently the resources to make models which few of us could aspire to make for ourselves. Certainly Simon Kohler is optimistic that supply of quality models will continue, and improve through 2014. For myself, my hobby is re-creating BR steam in photos using 00 RTR models, and I am pleased by the outlook Simon promotes. With the dearth of new models I have spent a fair bit on second-hand weathered models, and there is no shortage of excellent models in that market, at prices which are holding up well , or poorly, depending on whether you are selling or buying! Anyway those are my thoughts on the subject of the future of Hornby; I am happy with their attitude and previous models, and look forward with great interest to the supply of the many models listed for arrival, or should that be 'release' in December. robmcg
Continuing from my above message, here are two examples... one of the models is available new at around £106 even now... and the second hand market is quite buoyant. So you can perhaps see why I am quite happy with Hornby's outlook.
RMweb Gold Andy W Posted November 11, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 11, 2013 It occurs to me that a forum like this can bring about a lot of hopes and expectations which may not have been so keenly felt in the days before the internet, but then the many and various delays which have happened since Kader went bust have not been very effectively dealt with, except offering 'hoped-for' arrivals, which have mostly been quite unfulfilled. Before some bizarre internet rumour starts, Kader are still very much in business, haven't gone bust and show no signs of doing so. They are of course the parent company of Bachmann. The Hornby supplier that went bust is Sanda Kan. The remains of the business were acquired by Kader, who were then making models both for their own brands and for Hornby and others. As time passed they have been doing less and less manufacturing for others and concentrating on their own brands, which is why Hornby is building up a network of alternative suppliers, with varying success. Most of the ex-Sanda Kan factories are now closed.
RMweb Gold Dunsignalling Posted November 11, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 11, 2013 and this... A4_60023_3a_r800.jpg not to mention an older model, early 2000s, sympathetically weathered, I wonder how the unrebuilt Bulleids would be received in today's market? With a plethora of parts to be fitted by the owner including 6 white route code discs and the very flimsy front steps and external brake rods. WC_34091_1a_r800.jpg WC_34091_2a.jpg WC_34091_3a_r800.jpg note; a couple of these pics already very slightly modified. The fairings ahead of the cylinders were removed from West Countries in the early 1950s, they come off the model quite easily. Hornby made so few errors with these locos that I suspected Weymouth might have kept hers and had to hunt out a photograph to confirm their absence! Further models would be eagerly snapped up by me at least - especially if they were to do 34006 'Bude' as running in the sixties! Some wide-cab examples paired with cut-down 4500g. tenders after losing their large ones to rebuilts would be good, too. John
Jol Wilkinson
When I (occasionally) look at such topics, I find myself surprised at the wealth of RTR models available from the various suppliers. How would today's enthusiast feel about the early days of Hornby, Trix and Triang ranges when a new loco appeared every couple of years and then usually in only one livery/number variant. For those that wanted something different it was down to "super-detailing" or kit/scratch building, which is how many modellers learned their model making skills. If the volume of Hornby's new offerings is seen as inadequate, then I hope that I can therefore be excused that I sometimes get the feeling that quite a few of today's collectors are looking a gift horse in the mouth. Absolutely agree. In the Hornby Star thread, people are seriously disappointed by some silly errors and a fudge or two, but to the casual observer the overall impression is of a fine model loco, unmistakeably a Star, which owners tell us can haul well, too. As you say, a huge change from the narrow market of my childhood, when even the best locos, of the few RTR models available, were rough approximations by comparison. There are few releases for November, and I await an official notice from Margate to tell us which of the above will miss Christmas and arrive in 2014. We retailers need to let our customers know what Santa will not be bringing them! And the last despatch day from Margate will be Friday 20th December which should arrive on Monday 23rd, then there will be no deliveries until the New Year. robmcg
Thank you for correcting my embarrassing error about Sanda Kan. Wires crossed, age, infirmity...
