RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted September 13, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 13, 2013 Well, why not. The description (or at least the part I can see) is fairly self explanatory, it's something I've not built before and it's undoubtedly Allan Downes inspired. Build photos and my attempts at the master's methods as we go...

Jaz
Well if the sails are going to work, how about a little Camblewick Green cameo with Windy Miller (he sounds like he needs a WC). Sure it wont add much to the workload..........just another 6 months
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted September 16, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 16, 2013 Stu, Will the sails be operational? Or is that asking too much for a limited time challenge? I am think about how best to make it operational, including the option of motorising...

allan downes
So Stu as opted for the windmill. Well, I have to say, he could make a far better job of it than I did with one arm tied behind his back and blindfolded to boot so Stu, I pronounce you the winner in advance !! Best of luck, you've got a week at most ! Allan. BTW, Popye has put up some of my very old work on the Robinson/Downes Thread that shows some of the buildings that appeared in the Downesplans Books. allan downes
Were the roof tiles on the original made from bun cases or summat similar? Yes, fairy cake cups to be precise, my late wife's idea. Cheers. Allan.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted September 19, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 19, 2013 Quite encouraged by all the replies so far, not least Allan announcing me as the winner without me even starting. No progress at all, as yet, as a couple of orders have come in and they obviously get priority. But, I have been musing on the best way to construct a tapered hexagonal tube with shiplap cladding, and what material to use. The paper cupcake holders is an excellent idea which will be used, not sure about the Windy Miller cameo...

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted September 19, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 19, 2013 A turned chair leg would make a good former, if you can find one of the right size and taper.
allan downes
A turned chair leg would make a good former, if you can find one of the right size and taper. And so would a tapered paint brush handle in Z gauge. What ?...I'ts all part of the challenge - any scale, any guage - innit ?! Cheers all you Zedders. Allan. RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted September 20, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 20, 2013 If you need a turning try a heafty nail pilot drilled through the center of a bulsa block in the drill clamped to the bench and use rough sand paper. I have turned small pieces of hard wood this way with great success. Try sawing most of the waste bulsa away first to make it easier. Shaun
DonB
Stu, Motorising the sails..... try http://www.technobotsonline.com/ for geared motors, they seem to have a big range of low (3 to 12) volt types, in the sub- 15 Quid range. Absolutely no connection... YET! ... I'm considering one for the drive on the Cliff Railway Funicular.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted September 28, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 28, 2013 Thanks Don, I already have a low rpm motor which would be suitable, as previously used on the wagon hoist on Wheal Tiny. I used the track controller (H & M Clipper) to control it, via a DPDT switch.
