Class 47 photos

Recommended Posts

Some 47's found in my old negs. From the Hitchin area Norwich, Cheddington and Thornaby. Last one on the rear of Flying Scotsman just before it failed at Peterborough. This was Donnington Links. Hope of interest. The nice green one was at a open day Bounds Green I think many years back!!

Two more from the 1970s:

Diverted from the ECML because of engineering work, 47522 passes Gateshead depot with an up express on 27th July 1975. It will take the Leamside Branch at Pelaw and rejoin the main line near Durham

Note how the area of the roof between the roof doors and the contrail grill on 47420 is translucent fibre glass, not as Bachmann do that area.

Not strictly class 47., but the mk2 brake behind 47457 looks to have the br grey carried around to the end on the coach, unless there is a trick of the light!.., any clues on that ?

Trick of the light or not, it looks a bit like a DBSO....

Trick of the light, all lot of high use mk2s ended up with that effect, a build up of brake dust, exmover and other *rap.

While out photographing 'Westerns' I grabbed this shot of a pair of Class 47s at Dawlish. There does not seem to be any exhaust from the second one, so perhaps 47212 is doing all the work?

47212 and 47377 head north though Dawlish on 31st May 1975

I do like that photo as it has a great selection of c;classic 1970s cars.

The leading loco is doing all the work, as the radiator shutters are closed position. This could a position move for that locomotive or going for repair to "OC"

Genuinely shocked at how overgrown the line side is looking down from Slutchers Lane Bridge.

Didn't there used to be a signal there?  I'm sure there was.

Signal is just round the corner as shown in the background of this:

Shot is horribly overgrown at Slutchers now, probably one summer away from being too far gone sadly...

In later years 47212 was highly sought after for haulage but in 1975 how many would have been interested with the chase on for Westerns...

Here's a shot of 47544 (which might appeal to the RMweb member who has this number as part of his name!):

post-24907-0-80643400-1512142662_thumb.jpg

47544 passes the disused Team Valley Trading Estate exchange sidings at Low Fell with an Anglo-Scottish express on 6th July 1975.

(Hmm, not sure if Anglo-Scottish should include capital letters or not)

Nice photo thanks! Yes, 47544 is a favourite as my first recorded loco haulage by a Class 47 back in 1976 - 15.00 Edinburgh to Kings Cross when we were hoping for a Deltic! Edited by brushman47544

Here's another one from steam days (just!) taken at Preston the month before the end. Note the emergency 'stick-on' train reporting numbers on the front.

D1846 with a southbound train at Preston on 18th July 1968. Also in view are 45212 and D7577

Here's a shot of a Virgin 47 from 2001:

attachicon.gif(355bS) 47840 North Star Gateshead West station 22-5-01 (T Ermel).jpg

47840 'North Star' has just crossed the High Level Bridge out of Newcastle with the 13.08 to Bristol and is passing through the disused Gateshead West platforms on 22nd May 2001.

Trevor

The building above the 47 brings back fond memories of when I used to bunk round Gateshead shed in the 1960s. There was some wooden steps at the back of this building which we used to use, then along that building, then turn right past the works into the shed yard. You can see where the steps used to be by the dark stain bottom left to top right on this photo taken on 15/4/2009.
