I can’t imagine it worked like that over the S&C, the electric would have been removed at Lostock Jct or Preston. It could have come via the GSW if the electric was needed in Glasgow for a southbound train later, but I think it more likely to have been a failure or the wires were switched off. There’s an unpiloted 86 in the next platform which seems likely to arrived via Carstairs.

Hi Brushman,

I cannot fault your  reasoning as I have no further info on the working. I do know that electrics were piloted over the S&C.

The 86 in Platform 2 could always have arrived from Polmadie with empty stock...again, unknown.

I’m just content that I have managed to find a half decent pic from the attic!

Later,
Stu from EGDL.

Spotted your picture so thought I’d add this one, presented to my Uncle.....Driver Ron Kennedy when he drove the 47 and dragged 89001 to its naming ceremony, such a spick  and span Loco that day.....AF204AD0-3126-4A94-9C1C-F06CB7D57965.jpeg.9f40d32da12fc3b5e4c269587c06bd62.jpeg

This is 47425 either passing through or pulling away from Newark North Gate on 1st August 1975 with an Aberdeen-Kings Cross train (1E11)

Looks like a pair of Class 31 on the left but I didn't make a note at the time

How late did Newark keep semaphores then? Was it under the Doncaster scheme of 1978/79 ish?

There was a temporary panel installed in Newark South on 10/07/1977 which saw off the remaining semaphores from the area.

A couple of not-too-bad-for-an-Instamatic photos from my yoof (I'd just left school when I took these) - first up D1717 prepares to leave Truro westbound on 14th August 1971 - my second home is prominent crossing the yard in the background! Truro yard was in the process of being remodelled, as a result of which goods traffic was temporarily rerouted down the Newham branch which saw a considerable upturn in traffic........just before it was axed owing to the new yard here being opened for business on 7th November 1971, an event appropriately attended by 1660 City of Truro in its slightly odd blue livery, parked in the down yard sidings at the east end .........

A couple of weeks earlier I'd captured the final Class 47 to enter traffic, D1961, heading in the opposite direction on 31st July 1971. These 'very early blue' locos became a semi-regular sight in Cornwall that summer for some reason. As a sign of things to come D1960/1 had been fitted with ETH equipment from new. One of the major changes wrought by the remodelling was that up trains no longer went 'around the outside' via Platform 4 - this became a west-facing siding. All up trains now used Platform 3, as here, and the Falmouth branch trains which had used this platform went back the using the bay (P1) as they had in steam days. The bay had been pretty redundant during the years in between but in autumn 1967 Hymeks D7017 and D7088 were discovered parked in it, the latter more than once, and on one of these occasions D7029 rolled in at the head of the down 'Cornish Riviera Express' so there were two Hymeks standing side by side in Truro - in Cornwall, you know, where Hymeks were seldom seen.......sorry I digress, this is a Brush Type 4 thread!.......

47123 at Old Oak Common on 6th April 1974 (a pity my first 35mm camera gave worse results than the Insty!) - this had been 1712 shortly before and the BR logo nearest the driver's doors had been painted out to locate the new TOPS number there. 47097 (ex-1684) was also like this. However 47493 (ex-1932) retained its four logos and the new number was applied to the driver's cabside. Then there were very early blue, as above, 47260 (ex-1956) and 47514 (ex-1960) ........this was a fascinating period as depots seemed to carry out TOPS renumbering in whichever way they saw fit, a shame it's not modelled more often......

And then there were the TOPS green locos of course - here's what my first-ever Brush Type 4 sighting (from my second home, see above)  looked like nearly 8 years after the event - it's the same green paintwork under there........somewhere!.......47091 ex-1677 ex-Thor at Swindon on 7th May 1975. Heaven only knows the impression sights like these made on the travelling public!.......

One more (for now - I'll let somebody else have a go!) - D1698 at Exeter on 5th July 1969. Application of full yellow ends to Class 47s was so rapid that sights like these were becoming uncommon by this time, and I never saw that many in Gsyp livery. I struck it lucky that day as, having travelled to Paignton by car, I hopped on the train there for a day's spotting in Exeter and scored still-green D854 Tiger along the sea wall. What should haul me back again later in the day, none other than D1698! Since both classes were highly deficient in Gsyp examples by then I regarded this as something of a result (and still do). That's D1757 lurking in the background, not sure about the Warship.......well, this was 1969, they were a few about!

That Instamatic camera again........perhaps I'd have been better off keeping this and not bothering with that wretched Halina piece of cr
