Crewe Works. Whats currently in there?

Bit of a sad bump for this topic....

 

they have started to demolish more of the works including the huge wall along west street that during the war was painted to protect the works from bombers, basically everything on the Chester side of the traverser is being flattened to build a new housing estate, managed to get a quick pic from a taxi yesterday

 

another bit of history gone, that and the old north shed wall demolished so far this month!

I’ll try and get a better pic but my wife grabbed This one as we were passing earlier 

 

 

sad to see the whole factory end wall gone, I can only assume the bottom is Either staying up and will be finished and tidied up properly or they will leave it up until the house construction is complete then pull down the last bit (saves them putting up temporary fencing)

Walked past the old works today and noted that the front garden walls of the new houses they have built appear to be made from bricks recovered from the old factory end 

 

also noticed the new retail park they have built in the site of the old north shed appears to have a perimeter wall made from recovered bricks from the final standing wall of the shed

Reading elsewhere yesterday it seems to be a some of power tussle between the council and the construction company, poor residents get blighted instead - now everyone will think the land is massively contaminated, would you buy?

Even if it did get sorted when future searches are carried out for potential buyers will the current show up in the search? 
 

a quick google if looking to buy on that estate in the future would bring up articles like the one above which would start to ring alarm bells with me, I recon the whole episode will have devalued the houses greatly

 

I can’t believe some of the remaining houses are £300000 too given it’s location, I suppose some of the residents work in Bentley and they’ve aimed the top end prices houses for those people

Seems to me it's not the residents' fault.  The planners/building control etc have apparently fallen down on their job of making sure the land was suitable condition for building on, and if planning consent is missing/deficient, so have the lawyers who gave the builders the OK to build and the purchasers the OK to buy.  Whether the council cocked it up or the builders took a short cut on tasks like decontaminating land, the end result is the residents get shafted as there the supposed protection they paid lawyers for turned out to be worthless. 

 

And I wouldn't count on the courts to provide redress any time soon because judges are themselves overpaid lawyers.  Much the same as investigations of the police, by the police, for the police.

Amid all the dereliction of the old works there are still some nice area to be found in the town, queens park has had something of a renaissance after a long drawn out refurbishment, went there on sunday as it was such a nice day as its only a 10 mins walk from the house

These great pictures brought back long forgotten but wonderful memories of visits to Crew park from Newcastle-under-Lyme with Mum in the early 1970s.

The car in the google street view below was stuck in the lawn of one of the houses on west street for about 4 months last year, reversed into the grass for whatever reason then sunk up to its axle (in contaminated mud!) 

 

 

a bit further along the street as mentioned in my previous posts they have built the front garden wall using the old bricks from the original building, they have kept the pillar spacing the same which has resulted in some of the houses having a pillar right in front of the  door or window, think they took inspiration from travelling in a Pendolino! 

 

currently the main road outside the estate is shocking, more pot hole than road!
