Ordered 10 Slimrail OTAs which arrived today. Had a go earlier at putting the first one together, just needs the couplings and buffers. The kit goes together really well and has had the stanchions modified to suit the later condition.

Painting of the OTAs in progress, 7 green and 3 in red/pink. All will need to be suitable weathered with quite a bit of rust. Majority of the stanchions will end up a rusty brown rather than the white they are now.

Work on the OTAs continues, made a start on the weathering, this is a mix of dry brushing and powders. Although the stanchions did start as white, by the late 90s (even before) they had become pretty rusty. Pictured below are 2 of the faded Railfreight red ones. Still bits to pick out and not decided if to run loaded or empty.

The work on the OTA rake is nearing completion. Still undecided to run empty or loaded. May order a few timber loads from Ten Commandments to help me decide.

Some more pics below of the faded green livery and the complete rake behind 60078. Another 5 OTAs will probably be added to the rake in the near future.

Hi Simon,

I would recommend that you use the real thing, twigs from the garden/park of diameter 1-2mm are best. I attach some of my otas for reference... cheaper than bought loads and individual too. We have since improved the vinyl tape strapping. I think you may find that twigs are less weight too.

After managing to obtain a second Virgin liveried DVT, a second rake was formed using mk2's from my Cross Country rakes to represent an Oxley Mk2 Push Pull rake. Although primarily used between Euston and Wolverhampton, some were diagramed on the Euston to Glasgow route. Here is a video of the testing, the kitchen car is Dapol.

Had a go at trying to follow a train along the length of the layout yesterday evening. Here is the result following 60078 on the Cawoods to Seaforth as a pair of 86's on a liner are held at the signal.

The layout looks cracking Simon. The freightliner rake really shows off the length well. Great to see real length trains.

How do get on with such a long rake around the curves at the end? Have you had to do anything special like adding weights?

All the best

Thanks David, nothing done weight wise and all go round without derailing. The Dapol Megafrets which are at the end of that rake will derail if run empty in the middle of the consist for example, tagged on the rear empty and they are fine.

Some more wagons added to the Dallam roster today courtesy of Waltons of Altrincham. 3 TTAs to represent the fuel oil service to Arpley LIP which were tagged onto a service from Immingham. I had seen pictures of TTAs at Arpley and wondered how they got there, Dave Beast 66606 gave me the answer which showed they would have gone past Dallam.

Here are a few pics and a clip. The Total and BP logos need to be removed and then suitably weathered.

Cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

Bit more work done on the layout and some stock aswell. On Folly Lane bridge there is some metal trunking fixed to the brickwork, this should have been done ready for Dallam's first show but lack of time etc. This has been formed from Evergreen strip, painted and weathered.

Also the TTA fuel tanks are currently being worked on. The logos have now been removed, the Petroleum sector badges have also been removed from the Total versions. All 3 need fading then weathering. The picture below taken part way through.

Cheers

Hi Simon, I like the bridge, particularly the detail, that's well observed and nicely done.

Another project to look into are Freightliner FSA and FTA wagons. I have 2 Dapol Megafrets, 3 Revolution KFAs on order, also C Rails Pocket wagons are in development but there are no FSA/FTAs. So picked up a cheap used Farish Intermodal pair and looking what is required for a conversion. It looks possible, would not be 100% accurate though.

Looks like the bogie centres need moving out approx 1mm either direction. Then the flat section extending by approx 4-5mm each end, the couplings would need extending, data panels cutting down. Think tonights task will be looking at pictures and drawings and working out a method. These 2 will be the outers.

Cheers

Good luck with the FSA/FTA sets, one of my ongoing projects is similar but in OO. If it helps; I was fortunate to find a second hand attempt by someone else made from a Bachmann FIA twin set. They had chopped the flat and added a bit of length with plasticard. The containers were stuck to the flat which helped increase the rigidity. Only obvious detail error was the missing 'low' headstocks on the inner ends. Because my use involves containers being loose and changed about making the deck visible, I designed and had laser cut new decks to overlay the existing cut and shut work, the ribs don't line up as on the prototype, but it's all hidden enough to work and only 1 extra rib needs adding where the cut is. There are some pictures end of page 3/start of page 4 on the Wulfruna link below. (I'm not the best at updating everything, not sure if there are pictures of the laser cut deck on here anywhere but will look if if helps)

Well had a go at lengthening a Farish Intermodal to represent a Freightliner FSA outer. The distance between bogies has been lengthened by 3mm, also the draw gear has been moved out at both ends. The deck length is now a correct 60ft compared to drawings. However when trying with a Farish 40 & 20 ft container together there is a 4mm overhang. Checking the Farish containers looks like they are too long.

This is going to be left to dry and checked for strength before doing any further work.

Further to my last post on the FSA conversion, my measurements were wrong, hence the 20&40 containers causing an overhang. So took it all apart and extended the distance between bogies by another 3mm. Also all the swapbody mountings have been removed from the frame sides along with the data panel which was mounted on the underframe. Next job will be to modify the deck area over the bogies as per an FSA and also clean the sides up then add something to represent the twist lock mountings.

Cheers

Excellent stuff. Found my 'work in progress' OO version; the deck overlays are more of a generic FTA rather than FSA for design ease and a mixture of plasticard and MDF created on a laser cutter. Not sure how easy doing the same in N with a thinner material would work, but the cad was my work and scaleable if you'd like to use it.

Depending on the level of detail you're going for, don't forget the lower level headstocks on the inner ends.

Keep up the good work.
