Had a trip out to Hatton's earlier to pick some more VGAs up. On the way back I stopped of at Dallam to get some pics of the signal at the sidings end and then drove over to Froghall Lane to walk back along the path to photograph the gantry for Signals WN174 & WN175.

Dallam sidings - unfortunately rear shots only but I can work out what goes where.

Gantry for Signals WN174 and WN175 - lighting not the best.

The additional vans on the layout alongside the cargotwins make the yard look busier which it was usually. The cargotwins will be swapped for Dapol bogie Cargo wagons. Also thinking of making the door on the warehouse motorised.

Thanks. I thought thats what it was but wasnt certain. I suppose having four mainline tracks it helps .

I’m just one man in his garage but it’s amazing how often I transpose the running lines ‘out front’ with the fiddleyard lines, I ended up writing UF/US/DF/DS on the base board, but I like the coloured stripes!

I did also make a temporary overhead gantry at the fiddleyard exits to show what direction was allowed on each road. Hopefully before it goes back out I will make something more permanent.

Cheers

I’ve seen that done well a few times. It’s amazing how hard it is to look at 10+ roads and work out the clear one without a visual cue. I piled a Pendolino into a rake of PCAs recently, could’ve sworn the road was clear...

There was a number of similar collisions whilst at the Stafford show. Unfortunately most if not all were caused by me and none of the other operators. I think at shows I should just look after stock cleaning and getting the teas and coffees!

Bit more work on the gantry this evening. More bits added to the signal supports in the form of lower base covers/panels, the back angled panel, internal ladders and framework for the inspection walkway. Apart from the ladders (N Brass) the rest has been formed from brass rod and brass sheet cut to size.

Its slowly getting there. Today the protective mesh screens have been soldered in position, these are N Brass cut to fit as required.

Also the inspection access ladder has been started. This again is a basic N Brass ladder with the safety hoops formed from 0.33mm brass wire soldered in position. Some tweaking with the ladder assembly maybe required.

Hi,

Are you planning fully working signals? My apologies for not reading the whole thread to much to do on my own layout. If you are how do you plan to do the wiring, even with the thinnest it could still end up looking bulky on what is looking a fine structure.

Cheers

Hi Duncan, yes unfortunately some of the wiring will be visible. The enameled wire provided with the CR signals is very thin however and I have also bought some even thinner enameled wire, 0.08mm, so hopefully will be able to minimise the visual effect on the structure.

Hi Duncan,

This is how thick 6 pieces of wire will be, feeds for a 4 aspect with route indicator.

This is the route the wires will go as per prototype, down between the cross bracing, I have just used a piece of brass wire to highlight.

If you look at the far set of legs on this picture, you can make out the conduit running between the cross bracing.

So it may not look as bad as I first thought.

Construction of the first gantry is basically complete, I think! I am going to spray it before installing the signal heads.

Walkway and safety railings were last things to fit. The safety railings are modified N Brass etches.

In position

Next signal to focus on will be the one alongside Dallam sidings.

Cracking stuff Simon! Have to say, and I know it's been mentioned before, adding the overhead wires would really complete the look, especially with that gantry.

Brilliant!

Keep up the good work.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Thanks Jeremy, I know what you mean regards the wires, think if time become available I may look at it. May make a test plank to practice on first though.

Made a start on the signal which goes alongside Dallam sidings last night.

Progress so far, going to make a finer base for it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Not be able to progress constructing the second gantry due to time constraints over past few days, run upto Christmas etc. However have managed to clean up the first gantry and give it a few coats of Halfords Grey Primer.

post-6834-0-06603300-1545157551_thumb.jpg

I think the grey needs to be a bit lighter so may give it a coat of Rail grey or similar. Following this it will need some suitable weathering.

Cheers
