sb67
Ok, thanks Alex, I Should have mentioned I'm building a freelance hut and haven't got a drawing to work from. I might have to draw a plan until the roof looks right then go from there. Steve.
sb67
Thanks for the tips Alex, done my roof, a couple of mistakes, I didn,t make the base big enough to overhang, but that's ok. I used Wills slate sheets and I'm pleased with how it looks. Thanks. Steve.
wiggoforgold
Steve, presumably by using the Wills sheets you were able to do away with some of the supports and just rely on the ridge profile? Alex
RMweb Premium DLT Posted November 14, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 14, 2018 I once did a show at Newton Abbot racecourse. That had an authentic temperature. Alex I did a show in there, it was the only time I ever operated a layout wearing a ski-jacket and gloves...
sb67
Steve, presumably by using the Wills sheets you were able to do away with some of the supports and just rely on the ridge profile? Alex I still put the supports there but I guess the Wills sheets would have been ok as they're pretty thick. The cuting and fitting was more tria and error than anything else and I had to do a bit of filling at the joins which were covered by the ridge tiles. I'm going to keep my eyes open for that book you mentioned as well. Steve.
wiggoforgold
Upwell Drove is off on it's travels today. Only as far as the garage though, to have some "dirty" jobs done on the woodworking and wiring. It will be travelling further afield in the New Year, though: watch this space for further details. A trip north of Bristol is on the agenda! In the meantime, here are a couple of pics of the state of play this morning. The scenic area of the yard has grown, and I've finished the tiling on the waiting shed roof, and given it some paint. The waiting shed sits a little high at the moment: I'm going to remove the baseboard top beneath it. so it will drop down by approximnately the height of the white strip currently visible below the door. wiggoforgold
The tramway waiting shed is nearly finished. It just needs the gents toilet area completing, down pipes and the quoins for the removed canopy round the door. After that it can be bedded in to the platform area. Next jobs are rebuilding the proscenium, and a new backdrop for Elm Lane. Alex

Popular Post wiggoforgold
I wasn’t happy with the backdrops for Elm Lane and Upwell Drove. I decided there were two things about it I was particularly unhappy with – the proscenium was too high and the cloth back drop, used to keep down weight and to avoid the visible join in the sky, had a number of problems. The idea was the back drop would simply unroll in place. In practice, it was very difficult to get the entrance and exit holes in the backdrop lined up with the track, and it was difficult to get it to hang correctly without obvious ripples. The backdrop for Elm Lane has now been replaced completely with a solid backdrop made from mounting board. Upwell Drove still has a cloth backdrop, but I’m hoping to improve the entrance/exit hole, and change the method of fixing in place so that it hangs better, and is quicker to set up. Here is a shot of Elm Lane, taken through the hole in the backdrop where the track passes to Upwell Drove. I’ve reduced the height of the proscenium, and added a top from mounting board, which cuts out extraneous shadows. The picture shows the LED lighting strip behind the proscenium. There is a second strip attached to the supporting beam which holds the top of the backdrop. I’ve done a bit more work on Upwell Drove. I’ve finished the landscaping of the back of the layout, up to the road where the line enters the depot, and I’ve made a start on bedding in the buildings. The depot office is finished (apart from the interior), the waiting shed is nearly complete, and the water tower needs the water tank building, and painting. The last shot today is a view of the whole depot. Compare this with the "helicoper view" taken fro m the same point in April! Alex
wiggoforgold
Upwell Drove will be appearing at the S&DJR trust show at Edgington on January 5th and 6th 2019. Extensive test running is currently under way. Unfortumately D2201 failed, but we Cambridge-Kettering types have a selection of J15s and Ivatt class 2s on hand , so these have been drafted in to provide a service. Here's some pics of them in action. I think they look quite at home. Because Jonty has been busy with his photography, he hasn't had time to clean his new Land Rover. Here's a picture of the Oxford Land Rover after a meeting with a spray of Humbrol acrylic varnish and some weathering powder. Off now to decorate the Christmas tree. wiggoforgold
Tonight I've been doing a bit of weathering on the Ivatt. I needed some Humbrol no9 gloss tan. I looked in my box of Humbrol paints and found a tin which must be over 50 yars old as I remember my brother buying it to paint some Airfix ships in about 1968. It was still useable, and mixed with some Matt black made a perfect oily colour for painting coupling rods. Alex

wiggoforgold
In my younger days, the accepted wisdom among GW modellers appeared to be "when in doubt, add a pannier". This was taken up by LMS modellers who altered it to "when in doubt, add a 4f". For modellers of East Anglia, the adage should surely be "when in doubt add a J15" (Or, "When in doubt add a J17" - are you listening Hornby?). Here are before and after pictures of Diddington's (and Upwell Drove's this weekend) latest recruit. The first pic shows the Hornby model as it arrived at Christmas, the second 4 days later after renumbering and some weathering. Happy New Year everyone, and hope you all had a good Christmas. Alex PS: Hornby, as well as the J17, how about an E4?

sb67
The J15 looks great Alex, how did you remove the old lettering etc? Steve.
wiggoforgold
Thanks Steve. I used Tcut, applied to the lettering with a cotton bud, and rubbed until the lettering disappears. The resulting polished surface was brushed with Humbrol decal fix, and new transfers (Railtech) applied. The finish is largely the original Hornby black. The only parts that were repainted were the cab roof, and the moulded plastic coal. Alex

NXEA!
I agree with that adage, I have more J15's than I really need. Lovely effort, how did you fashion the sheet rail if you don't mind me asking? I'm also desperate for an E4, would definitely have a couple of those if one was made!
wiggoforgold
With the unfortunate failure of the 04, steam currently reigns supreme at Upwell Drove. Here is the motive power roster for the weekend. The Ivatt 4mt looks quite at home. Alex With the unfortunate failure of the 04, steam currently reigns supreme at Upwell Drove. wiggoforgold
Well Upwell Drove had a sucessful outing to the Edington show last weekend. As always, we met a few people and came home with a few ideas. The lauout behaved well, though the late sustitution of a J17 for an 04 caused some headscratching with the length of the headshunt! Here's some pic of Upwell Drove at the show. The cloth backdrop at Upwell Drove, which i hadn't been happy with, has had a reprieve. Lowering the height of the proscenuim has helped, and I'm learning how to set up the backdrop so it hangs better. I got some good ideas about finishing it, so more on this soon. (I need to do some ironing and make a trip to Halfords! Alex
RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted January 11, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 11, 2019 Splendid stuff Alex. I completely forgot about that show and would have attended. Suggests that Sheep Lane could one day be exhibited there. Rob.
wiggoforgold
Sorry you missed it Rob. It would have been nice to see you and it was a good little show. I think Sheep Lane would tick all the boxes for exhibiting there, particularly as it is set in the area. Alex
