Popular Post wiggoforgold
A bit of a step by step for doing the brambles: I decided to build up the undergrowth at the village end of the yard as it looked a bit too tidy. This is what it looked like before I started. First, I buillt up the grass a bit with 6mm static grass fibres over a coat of hairspray. The basis of the brambles is theatrical hair, sold as "canopy" by Treemendus. I sprayed hairspray on the area I wanted the brambles, and then dropped some teased out canopy on it. It was manouvred in to place using a couple of wooden berbecue skewers, It was then given another coat of hairspray, and sprinkled with green leaf scatter (Carrs and Greenscene) for the leaves. I then did another patch at the other side of the track! Alex Alex 20 5
Popular Post wiggoforgold
After the work on the brambles, I did a bit of test running with the Ivatt class 2 Alex
mullie
Superb work and the Ivatt looks quite at home. Martyn
wiggoforgold
Thanks Martyn. I like the Ivatt. It's a bit of a sqeeze in the head shunt, which makes shunting the layout a bit of a challenge, but it can be done. Alex
sb67
Thanks for the 'how to' Alex, couple of questions. does the hairspray stick the leaves well and what was used for the ground work, ballast etc? I've always used horsehair for brambles but the postiche looks a lot thinner, I like the fact you can tease it out to the look you want. Steve. wiggoforgold
Steve The pastiche is a bit thinner than horsehair, I've used both from time to time, but Upwell Drove is currently all postiche. The hairspray holds well. Use one with "firm hold" (Tresemme grade theirs 1-5. Use a 5). After scattering I go over it with a hand held vacuum to pick up any story bits. Odd strands can be snipped off with scissors. The ballast is a mixture of Chinchilla grit from a pet shop, and ash. The yard areas are more ash, sprinkled on PVA. To give the effect of grass coming through, I put static grass over the ash while the glue was wet, and vacuumed it off while the glue was still wet, to leave a few fibres poking through the ash. There's also a bit of Treemendus earth powder in there, sprinkled along the edges by the grass. There's a few patches in the road where the surface has worn away. The basis of the landform is card mounting board. I cut away the top layer of the card, leaving the rough inner core, and filled the resultant hole with chinchilla grit (I got this idea from "Mutton". Alex. RMweb Gold Popular Post 46444 Posted December 7, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 7, 2019 Had a lovely day helping Alex and Liz operate Upwell Drove. First time I'd seen the layout and up to the usual Warren standard. The Model Rail/Rapido J70's are superb and run really well. Alex has weathered them nicely. Of course a visit to Upwell Drove by 46444 wouldn't be complete without a visiting Ivatt 2MT from Cambridge shed in the form of 46466. And even Jonty Chambers made an appearance with his trusty Thornton Pickard ... Lovely atmosphere and the old cattle pen makes a nice cameo. For some unknown reason a horse box can be found in the siding. Great show and well organised. Good choice of layouts and something for everyone. Good to see loads of families and Christmas Cheer. Worth a visit tomorrow if you could not make today. Good to catch up with David and Phil as well. Cheers, Mark
wiggoforgold
Cheers Mark and thanks for your help today. We are enjoying the show and have already met lots of friends old and new. Pictures to follow when we get heme. Special thanks to Liz who drove the layout up from Cornwall in a hired car she only picked up on Thursday with horrendous road conditions between Birmingham and Manchester. Couldn't have done it without her. Looking forward to tomorrow. Alex 1

RMweb Premium DavidLong Posted December 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 8, 2019 Alex, Good to meet you (and Mark) yesterday and enjoyed the couple of chats that we had during the day. The layout is as good as the photos promised it to be. Phil agreed with me that Upwell Drove was 'Best in Show' and made his trip up from Launceston well worthwhile. Oh, and Elm Lane is a mini-delight in itself! David 1
wiggoforgold
That's the Manchester show done. Back to Cornwall in the morning. Thanks for all the kind comments. I'll put some pictures up when I get home Alex

RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted December 21, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 21, 2019 Merry Christmas, Alex. Well done on what appears to have been a bit of a tour de force at Manchester. If ever there was a layout likely to inspire me to try L&NER..........then this is it... Tremendous stuff. RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted November 14, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 14, 2020 I have just spent a very pleasant time looking back through this thread and in particular the bud of Upwell Drove. RMweb Gold 46444 Posted November 14, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 14, 2020 Great to see Diddington and Upwell Drove once more. Hard to believe it was almost a year ago I helped Alex & Liz operate Upwell Drove at the Manchester Show. I know Alex is busy building his take on Yelverton but hopefully we can have some Fenland action once more. Thanks for bringing this layout thread out again Rob. Cheers, Mark 1
coline33
Yes, I too would like to have an update to see what a year since of lockdowns has done to this part of the W&U. I need a break from electric trams so an update might tempt me to get my W&U back out on the table top! Keep safe, Colin. 2
