Oddly that Met A (?) stock is the largest train there being just under 9' 7" wide, 4" more than the DMU and only slightly less high.

O & P stock was even wider.

There's obviously more room underground

than there is above ground.

That’s not as daft as it sounds, a new-construction underground line is effectively a greenfield site.

I’d never really thought about it, but Metropolitan Line stock is WIDE inside, isn’t it?

IF you keep yer 'ed down !

Clearly there's room to run the 'S' stock on District lines where the 'D' stock previously lived ...... yet that seems to be finding an after-life on the National Network - presumably with severe restrictions !!?!

The D stock is supposedly 9' 4" wide only an inch more than a Class 165 etc.

It ran where the much wider O & P stock formerly ran.

It may be that the inch is in an area that doesn't impinge on NR structures

Ipswich 1988

20T Brake Van B3955087 brings up the rear of the Griffin Wharf shunt as it cautiously negotiates the bi-directional Ipswich station middle road. The guard looks out for miscreants as 08460 provides traction up front. 24 Sptember1988.

Would this be due to some kind of brake failure on the loco, or wagons? Or maybe the 08 had no air brakes?

I guess cables and pipes take up less space

than buildings and roads.

Come! Come! you're off to Barnard Castle...................

(Look up the saying: "Come! Come! to Barnard Castle")

Very apt in the current political climate

On the Swindon to unwittingly joint line in the pontefract area there were street lights on the actual railway line on the approach to Baghill station i believe they were fitted due to.mining subsidence as far as I am aware the lighting columns are still there but not used i would go and have a look but I have to self shield at the moment

Here's an interesting US move.

A Schnabel car (transformer truck)

It's preceded on the tracks by a pick up truck!

Even a couple of cabooses for good luck

By  chance i saw a video of these cars recently. Even when not in use, they make an impressive train.

Basically the 2 end sections are joined together, with the extra side-beams etc. carried on flat wagons.

Hi-rail "pilots" are not unknown for 'regular' trains (that looks like a special move). Western Pacific ran Ford Broncos in advance of trains through the Feather Canyon in certain conditions. And BC Rail ran SUVs in front of trains along Howe Sound, between Squamish and North Vancouver.
