SeanG
That set is the wrong way round at Wigan - loco usually on the north end. But the GUVs were often put outside of the loco/DVT as not to break the TDM link between the two 1
Owd Bob
1.HP. I've always thought what if there was a treadmill in the base of the wagon so the horse can carry itself. 2

Nah, that was Cycloped at Rainhill, but this probably worked just as well!
RMweb Gold john new Posted June 23, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 23, 2020 There was a four horse version trialled on the LSWR IIRC circa 1850. There is a write up and line art illustration in a published book which I do have, but this afternoon I can't remember the title to look it up and provide a reference.

Anyone remember, or even have pictures of, the road version/tractor that was built by someone in Manea (Cambs) way back when? (Probably late 60s/early '70s). It featured on the local About Anglia tv program on occasions. Rather like a horse riding a bike! Stewart
stewartingram
Shame that is a hopper wagon, otherwise the 08 could be a tank engine..... I'd get my coat but it's a bit hot for that. Stewart 1

I thought the driver had just dropped his sandwiches out of the window and was about to get down to retrieve it when the Jinty set off with his train.

RMweb Premium petethemole Posted June 24, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 24, 2020 I thought it was a fish & chip wrapper from the local chippy, discarded by the Pullman chef after plating up several portions for service. 1

RMweb Gold SHMD Posted June 24, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 24, 2020 What a great photo. Something I wouldn't have given a second glance to, at the time, let alone a first one. Now I crave a metro valley Unit! Kev.

If you were really lucky, in the downgraded 1st class saloon, at the front, and the driver was nice & left the blinds up.

RMweb Premium melmerby Posted June 26, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 26, 2020 I reckon Bulleid's experiments with the Leader had carried on despite the project having been officially cancelled. He carried on the subterfuge by hiding the gubbins inside contemporary diesel loco bodies thinking that nobody would notice.
