It's not only diesel units that get mis-matched : -

Probably reformed due to accident damage. The SR (and its successors) weren't known for repainting stock to match unless it was absolutely necessary...

EDIT: Checking my records, 5454 exchanged DMBSO 14555 with 14264 of unit 5480 in October 1991, reason unknown. The latter then ran with three Blue/Grey coaches and one in NSE livery until withdrawn 20 January 1992. 5454 lasted in service until 14 May 1993.

Looks like a trip from West Blyth to Tyne Yard the crane at the front is the ADRF96405 that was the only crane suitable for use on West Blyth Staiths, the tank is probably a waste oil tank with a Grampus behind that looks like it is filled with pick up coal off the Staiths and surplus Brake Vans going for use on weekend P'Way trains out of Tyne!

As for date more like 1984 as the North Tyneside loop had closed and the platforms to the right taken out of use and lifted since about 1977 when closed for conversion to Metro.

Right thanks, that makes sense which means that this must be the front of that train...

I'm posting this mainly because of the number of brake vans in use, but I also noticed how one of them seems to be a ZTO brake van for departmental use, but I didn't know that this livery variant was in use in the 70s or is the photo date wrong??

The flickr caption just has c074 - not 1974 - it may be just the photographers reference number.

Other photos in the same gallery have "c080", "c081" and "a913" for example

The Engineers livery, or "Dutch" as it became known, first appeared around 1982. The first wagons I remember carrying it were the Turbot wagons used for spoil. They were rebodied using redundant bogie bolster E underframes, IIRC. The photo at Ince Moss reminded me of when they used to appear in the north west. In the early 80s I was a Shunter at Springs Branch. In 1983 I became a Guard at SP, we regularly had Turbot on spoil trains during weekend possessions. The loaded trains would be left at various locations such as Ince Moss and Kirkham tips. Others would be left at Edge Hill or Guide Bridge, to be to the tip sites during the week when room was available. Empty wagons would return ready for the following weekend.

I was wondering whether 5480 was actually used between October and January - or was it sat in a siding awaiting formal condemnation ?

No idea in this case. Usually if it was a coming together of some sort, then my original sources would have mentioned it. There were a couple of similar units send for overhaul but condemned on inspection for poor bodywork condition (5451, 5469) at that time so it may be case of 5480 being in that category and a better condition vehicle being substituted for the one in 5454. TSO 15291 was swapped with 15037 of 5449 before 5480 was stripped and sent for scrap in February 1992, so it looks like 5480 was a sacrificial lamb, providing better condition stock for overall better condition units.

I guess it just shows my ignorance, but I wouldn't have guessed that Bulleid designed stock would have got NSE colours.

At least I'm assuming it's Bulleid, the windows on the doors doors are characteristic of his work AFAIK.

Yes they're Bulleid-style 4EPBs - 72 of the 97 facelifted units numbered in the 54xx range received late NSE livery (darker blue with curved upsweeps).

The Graham Farish range included this livery on the recently re-tooled class 31 when it was first released.  I think it's quite a pleasing combination.

Is the Bachmann Porthole model the same as this coach? It might make for an interesting Limited Edition or modelling project if that's the case.

Steam and blue/grey coaches is one of those combinations that looks better than it has any right to, in my book at least!

Lovely pic, wonder if that was taken at the old Wellington side of Leeds City?

It’s always worth clicking on a posted image to see if it has been linked from another website (which could potentially have a lot more information). Many posters make it clear when they post something that is not their own material, but not everyone does.

5486 ran with one blue/grey and 3 x NSE for a time. Seen here at London Bridge in September 1992.

5486 swapped its DMBSO 14071 with 14211 of 5468 after the latters' withdrawl in April 1992, no reason given, but assumed to be poor condition. 5486 survived until 5 August 1994.
