Came across this in a FB group. Built by the Ludlow & Southern railway in Nevada. Can't find much in the way of details.

It’s been mentioned in the “Worst Looking Locomotive” topic. The original post has gone (I think the person who posted it may have “left”!), but the post below quotes that post.

You've heard of bi-mode electric+diesel, well here's tri-mode steam+electric+diesel, at a Chatham Dockyard open day in 1985:

Edit: in fact on the occasion of the Tall Ships Race visit to Chatham.

Doesn't the Alderney Railway on thr Channel Islands have that sort of thing as their day-to-day passenger service? I think they used to run a kind of improvised DMU from Wickham inspection trollies too.

This thread from 2011 on District Dave says that the two 1938 cars pictured above at Chatham are the same ones that later went to Alderney. Since scrapped and replaced by 1959 stock:

Got a steam layout but want to have an EMU and don't want to put any 3rd rail down?

(I'm sure there are similar examples for OLE units)

Hi Keefer,

I would guess that the unit is newly outshopped from Horwich works and on its way back to its home depot as Horwich was at the time engaged in the overhaul of various Midland region electric units.

Gibbo.

That unit looks like one of the earlier Altrincham sets ( class 505? ). They would have been repaired at Horwich about that time . Some were painted blue. I think they were withdrawn when the Altrincham line was converted to 25 kv and the units replaced with class 304s. The pantograph is on the driving car at the far end.

I may have posted these before, but if you have a weathered WD but love the idea of a Hornby 71 in mint condition - just model the GC in the late 50s/early 60s era. These are screen grabs from a video of a grimy 2-8-0 hauling a brand new SR electric through Nottingham Victoria. The number appears to be E5021 which would date the footage to around July 1960.

Sadly around the time I was applying for jobs in the railways, that important question "Does your Father work for the Railway" still had a lot of weight behind it, and I had to honestly reply - no!

Jim

You're right and that carried onto the late '80s/ early '90s. Many a time I was in areas of BR that I really shouldn't have been (cabs, depots, offices, tunnels...) and things that nowadays would have the tabloids screaming.

Back then, if you expressed an interest in a career on BR, management would usually turn a blind eye to you accompanying your Dad where you shouldn't- even encouraging it in many cases.

Now, a family history on the railway counts for nothing and a degree in media studies or whatever seems to be what they want.

I think being able to read the number of one of those would have triggered an immediate cardiac arrest, simply due to the shock.

It counted for nothing too when I joined the railway, as did a friend shortly before me, both of us with railway interest but no family railway history whatsoever. This was in 1978 !

Going almost completely O/T for a minute, and without looking up shed allocation websites or loco shed books for the era - here is a question for 'off the top of the head' responses.

If you had a time machine and could go back to April 1963 at Devons Road, Bow engine shed on a quiet Sunday afternoon, how many locos would you expect to see there - and how many (approx) of each individual class do you think might be on shed waiting for Monday morning?

There are no prizes for guessing, but I do have an answer to give sometime later.

All I can say is to reiterate my experience. When I expressed an interest in a railway career, my Dad's line management actively encouraged my Dad to let me visit at the weekends, school holidays etc. I knew the controls of a Brush 4 before I knew how to ride a bike. Yes really.
