We've had "trains in the landscape", but have we had wagons that were embedded in the landscape and abandoned for decades?

I thought that was an abandoned Roman railway uncovered in Pompeii:jester:

Any idea why it is preserved to view in that condition?

Bought too many 1:76 caravans? Simple, pop them on a flat wagon.

I can't remember if it was either a Workington/Huddersfield/Lincoln TPO that was formed of a sorting coach and BG in the late 80s/early 90s

Certainly the Lincoln one was at one time.  I'm not sure of the date of the photo.  It's captioned as the last mail train from Lincoln St Marks and that station was closed in May 1985, but the trees suggest a different time of year.  There's some information on the train here.

'May' have ceased running from St.Marks - or at all - weeks or months before the station closed ........ ?

It looks like it was transferred to Central at some earlier time as it certainly continued running - this photo is dated 1987 and rhe link I posted previously indicates it was running until 1991.

I’d take a guess it’s being used as a coupling adaptor, in the rake that gets split into sections before it goes into the cement works at Hope.

cheers,
Phil.

What a great couple of photos! The red rectangle and beginnings of the Tinsley white rose suggest it was needed in traffic before its unofficial name could be added. 45012 finished its days as Wyvern II.

This has got me all nostalgic. The number of times I must have popped over to Platform 16 and then looked into the stygian gloom of 17 to see if there was anything of interest!

In another thread this link to YouTube shows at 2:50 an ECML combination at Peterborough  I don’t remember seeing. A Class 91 with pan up on the front and a class 43 power car on the back and also powered up. How common was it?

Very common as I understand it. The 43s were used before the DVTs were ready and were initially dead in tow. However, this was found to damage the traction motors, so they were run in multiple in order to avoid this.

IIRC The IC125 power cars were used as the the DVTs weren't ready at the time the 91 powered service was introduced so some HST power cars were used instead.

Hence the buffers on the power car as well.

Gave a pretty awesome power to weight ratio when both operating!

I was lucky enough to get a drive of that combination when route learning,  absolutely awesome

Another reason why it had to have the powercar running was to supply power to the train

91s have conventional ETH which is not compatible with the three phase HST system
