RMweb Premium melmerby Posted December 11, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 11, 2018 (edited) Interesting sleeper arrangement. Thanks. I hadn't noticed that before Steel by the look of it. Above that stretch they are normal wooden sleepers: https://goo.gl/maps/voSeAnd1a322 Even further up there are steel ones. https://goo.gl/maps/i6EiVjCmamG2 And also from the spiral down: https://goo.gl/maps/ow2XG47NA5D2 Keith Edited December 11, 2018 by melmerby

RMweb Premium melmerby Posted December 11, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 11, 2018 I actually wondered if it was the secret doorway to the Swiss strategic steam reserve. RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted December 12, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 12, 2018 Interesting sleeper arrangement. It makes the track more stable in and around sharp curves, I guess it helps even out the stresses by spreading the load further. The Harz metre gauge also use it extensively. The down side is it needs a specialist tamper.

RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted December 12, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 12, 2018 But not used on the tightest curve, the spiral itself. Keith The section in the link was relaid after the big rockfall a few years ago destroyed that bit, there’s now a big trench to catch boulders on the mountain side. I guess the spiral will get them once it’s due relaying. It’s noticeable on the HSB that all the sharply curved sections are being relaid with these but there’s still a lot of conventional sleepering and it must be interesting tamping the transitions.

RMweb Premium melmerby Posted December 15, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 15, 2018 Looks remarkably like a headshunt there to release locos running round trains in the station Precisely. I assume the road came later and RhB insisted on keeping the track at that length, hence a bridge to nowhere. Keith
RMweb Gold The Johnster Posted December 15, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 15, 2018 Looks like moving preserved stock to the Railway museum? Looks like a postal vehicle. The bogie coach is an LNWR postal vehicle, not sure what the other one is but it certainly seems to be a museum stock move, probably some time in the mid 60s. Can't see head or tail lights, but the train is probably being run as unfitted because the brakes on the preserved stock do not work and are isolated. Keith It did. Track retained so that RhB could get at their strategic reserve stored in the tunnel under the hillside.
IWCR
The 4 wheeler looks like the 1872 NLR Directors Saloon which is now at Shildon (NRM). This is listed as donated in 1975 and previously at Clapham It was noted as stored at Lostock Hall prior to Clapham hence is presumably going to or from there. Fat Controller
And a rather unusual level crossing just along the road a bit: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@46.7395571,8.116001,3a,15y,6.4h,91.07t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s51sShekmqX1FdU7fta9iBQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 In this case, the level-crossing barrier isn't railway-related; it's to stop motorists getting entangled with the Swiss air-force.
