Matthew Snowden
Was very kindly give a FREE gift today by my good friends at my local model shop, Signals Models, Midsomer Norton (I can't thank then enough) ! This will hopefully come in very handy in speeding up the process on weathering the chassis on locos, which takes many, many hours with powders (I still plan to do the rest of the loco with powders though ). The only problem is I have no idea on where to start or on what blend of paints to use in it to get a nice base colour. Any tips? Here's a picture of the set... :0 Nooooo, traitor!!! Im gonna lose a painter n powder club member lol!!! Gud luck experimenting!
SDJR7F88
LOL! When you the window about 3 months ago! It was just a mess, so sticking with powders. Only problem is even though I am wearing a mask the powders and matt varnish have been giving my lungs hell...

SDJR7F88
The final item from the 3 Batch of Stock is now complete! There was one other loco, but the owner says that that one does not need to be done. Any back to the model in question, which is a Hornby Britannia Class (the famous tender driver version though ), 'Flying Dutchman'. Yet again I feel I have upped my game, making this my best work to date! I had to be very careful when doing the tender to avoid getting powders in the exposed gears. Sadly this my be the last weathered item for a while as I'm not sure if the owner will be giving me a 4th batch to do. Anyway please do tell me what you think of her and hope you enjoy these pictures (Sorry there's a lot of them I had trouble with light)!

Nelson Jackson
Some water/oil marks with gloss varnish would really finish her off nicely.

37255
The colours look excellent on that! If I were you I'd invest in a set of etched nameplates to really set it off; at the moment the printed names are the most obvious sign that it's a model. But her owner is going to collect her tomorrow. I hope he likes her! Wow! Thanks Will! She and the other stock are off home tomorrow. Hope he likes them! Some water/oil marks with gloss varnish would really finish her off nicely. Yes, was thinking that, but she is off home tomorrow. Just hope the owner likes her! SDJR7F88
Well the last Weathered Wagon on the shelf at Signals Models, Midsomer Norton has been sold, and believe it or not it is on the way to America! The wagon in question is a Bachmann Slope Side 16 Ton Mineral wagon. It is not to first of my weathering to go over seas, with one going over back last September to Canada, a Bachmann private owner coal wagon. Here's some pictures of the wagons in question, plus a video of the Private Owner featuring in a rake on the owners layout in Canada! :locomotive:See if you can spot it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pxe-A0_9lJc&index=2&list=FLJKqyjP8D2zbkYamMCsn-2w

SDJR7F88
They were a while a go! Good to see they've all been sold I know, they all went quick and then it was just Slopped Side 16 Tonner left. Sold the private owner back last September. So amazed they are on the other side of the world!
Eric & Gripper
Well you could certainly give TMC a run for their money. The 'dutchman' is certainly comparable to some of there recent adverts My only criticism would be a lack of definition. It's all a bit flat / matt on an oily, damp and indeed dusty loco. It's the oily and damp bits you need to have a look at.. Best regards Eric and Gripper. Edited May 12, 2014 by Eric & Gripper

Eric & Gripper
comparing to TMC is rather damning with faint praise (IMHO). The standard of JR7F88's weathering is far superior I think. It was not my intention to damn the work of SDJR7F88 nor that of TMC. The techniques used have produced a similar look to that of TMC. The 9fs and Britannias on there ads have a similar range of colours and effects. SDJR7F88 is an accomplished painter, his airbrush work and weathering is top quality. If we cannot offer citique and support to one an-another how do we move forward. If we were to model Barry scrapyard in 1975 you would expect flat paint and an overall dry look. Pre 24/12/66 70018 would have required water, oil and coal on a daily basis. The sooty look has been thoroughly covered with 70018. My recommendation was intended to bring it alive, as you would with a artitsts painting. Signs of damp and grease can easily be achieved with light brush strokes of various varnishes. leaky drain cocks, cyllinders and valves would be commonplace by 1966. Greasy wheels and valve gear which vary in tone from the boiler can also be achievd with a little satin varnish. Apologies if I have caused any offence. Best regards Eric & Gripper. daveymills
hi E&G no offence caused at all ! Many people I speak to don't rate TMC's weathering. It's a little basic in my opinion - that was my point. So if someone compared my weathering to TMC I would not consider it much of a complement. Of course I appreciate other people may have different opinions on TMC. I bought a Bachmann TTA wagon off them once, and it looked like 4-5 quick squirts with an airbrush and that was it. They may have improved over the years. So yes continue to support/rate the forum's contributors, it's one way for us to better ourselves. cheers Dave Edited to add picture of said TTA Edited May 13, 2014 by daveymills
