Hornby R3206 Tornado - How near to early 1950s condition blue A1?

I like blue BR express engines from 1949 - 1952 period and for a while have been tempted to buy the Hornby R3206 'Tornado' but do not whether it is purely a preserved engine or is a reasonable representation of an A1 in BR service just after natinalisation. Advice appreciated.

I'm not to sure of the specifics but the top of the tender is certainly different as tornado's tender was modified from the original LNER design to carry more water. But what I will say though is that its certainly a good price at £89.99 with free post.

Another idea would be to look out on ebay for the Bachmann model of North British which is in BR express blue.

Tornado is not a preserved engine. It''s a new build, completed in 2008 (iirc).

It has many differences from the original A1 as run inthe 1950s, air brakes, different tender, chime and normal whistles, LED lamps.

Of these, the tender top is the most visually obvious, but you will have to remove the chime whistle if modelled - it's inside the RHS smoke deflector.

Could be that members read this forum and get their credit cards out and vacuum up the bargains, or there are only a few loco's available as a loss leader,  or seller realises it is an error and revises the price upwards.
