RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted May 27, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 27, 2018 I note that this has been 8 years in the making. Good things are worth waiting for, and the continuous line-up of viewers at Railex simply underwrote that fact. You walked in the door, there was Hornsey with admirers. Every time I got to the front things were working fine, although there was an army of operators, reflecting the complexity of the track-plan. Those of us lucky enough to recall urban London with trip-working and exotic loco classes can truly be transported back a few decades by Hornsey. First rate stuff.
ianblenk
It was good to see this in the flesh today, and it very much lived up to my expectations. Adrian Well jel, just too far away for me :-(
RMweb Gold bcnPete Posted May 28, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 28, 2018 Another one who made the trip to Railex just to see this - and well worth it indeed. Reminds me of a real slice of my earlier upbringing in London and in between watching the trains go by it was great to just take in all the detail captured. Absolutely stunning
philiprporter
Likewise, seeing this layout in the flesh was the deciding factor in my attending this year-brilliant layout in every respect and a real inspiration to see.
BrushVeteran
.............................all that was missing were the diesel fumes and the raw cockney 'language' when the points failure occurred...................otherwise absolutely spot on in every respect! I could have watched it all day....................but unfortunately my sciatica couldn't.................well worth the effort to see. Looking forward to the next opportunity. Mike Storey
Only just latched on to this thread. Outstanding. I knew the ECML London end well from the mid 1960's through to the mid '70's (cos I lived near it), and then again for a few years in the 1980's when I worked at KGX. The colours and atmosphere are spot on. The views from outside the fence are entirely accurate in recollection, although I do recall rather more undergrowth and more fencing than is portrayed, but that could well be because I was rather shorter..... Just one observation, should you wish to weather it further, is that it was a very, very damp stretch, and moss grew everywhere out of direct sunlight, as well as attempted tree/major bush encroachment. BR ER maintained the track and lineside well, extremely well compared to these days, but this did not extend necessarily to the retaining walls and the few embankment structures. I well remember having to walk down the line from Harringay in the late 1980's towards Ferme Park, to see for myself the dislodged/cracked brickwork for which the CE wanted the InterCity sector to fund renovation. As their Representative on Earth at the time, I had instructions to verify the problem. I nearly sh8t myself.
RMweb Premium Ian J. Posted May 28, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 28, 2018 I saw this layout at RailEx at the weekend having not seen the thread here, and have to say very well done
sb67
I echo everyone elses comments, fantastic layout, great atmosphere, superbly weathered and detailed Stockton and superb buildings. Could have stayed for hours watching the trains go by. Steve.
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted May 29, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 29, 2018 I liked to subtle 'LMRification' going on in the background with the signal at the end of the platform and the colour scheme on the signalbox, great way of catching the feel of the period being modelled. RMweb Gold 81C Posted May 29, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 29, 2018 Excellent layout I was another one who saw it at Railex Sunday I did like the short van train that flashed through at breakneck speed much to the amusement of the crowd.
D1059
Sadly, I was away for the weekend so was unable to attend. Much cussing ensued when I realised I would miss seeing this excellent layout
Popular Post Wibble
Thank you to all those who have commented on this thread recently, and to the many folks I spent chatting to during the weekend at Aylesbury. For its first time out in an almost completed format, the layout ran very well considering no one had operated it before.... including me! A Japanese point motor fell in pieces during the Saturday morning which controlled the exit of the Down Slow Loop, but luckily all other components remained in one piece for the duration. Links to videos and images can be found on the Railex 2018 thread (under exhibitions). The June update for www.emgauge70s.co.uk is under preparation and should be uploaded in the next few days. In the meantime, here's an image taken during the set up on the Friday.
RMweb Gold russ p Posted May 30, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 30, 2018 Absolutely stunning layout, shame the railway its based on has changed out of all recognition and is just another featureless part of the modern network

Popular Post Wibble
The latest creation to emerge from the Hornsey Workshops is this collaboration, started by Jonny Duffet who shortened the bodies and chassis (from Bachmann 2-EPB DMBS X2), modified the cab ends and roof and detailed the underframe equipment (power / dummy pairing). It then came to me for re-gauging to EM and detail finishing, to include a final coat of paint and the addition of finishing detail and transfers. This pairing represent the 1975 Doncaster Works conversion to Class 97 battery electric locomotives (ex Class 501 EMU) for use on the Moorgate & Great Northern electrification and maintenance work. LDB975407 & LDB975408.

Popular Post Wibble
Me and a few mates spent the day by the lineside at Hornsey Broadway, and Paul managed to get a few snaps. Baby Deltic
Just love your optimism, all the way to Hitchin?!! Mike. There was probably just as much chance as a Mirrlees Type 2. The baby deltics were nowhere near as unreliable as they were made out to be. The Hitchin crews loved them and always kept the cabs well swept and pristine. Many of the Hitchin ASLEF badges have baby deltic's on them like the one in my avatar.
Popular Post Wibble
Time for an update methinks - there's not been a lot of modelling activity of late, but regular trips to the lineside is an enjoyable pastime, and it keeps the rails shiny BR Sulzer type 2 number 5007 is seen at Hornsey Road depot - a SLW model recently introduced into the Shenston Road fleet, finished and weathered by Greg. Bulleid 1-co-co-1 number 10203 also finished by Greg to include the missing beading from the bodyside.

Baby Deltic D5908, also reworked and finished by Paul, to include modifications to the headcode box, nose ends and cooling group grills.
