I’ve added push switches to the cobalt motors contacts so you can change points on the modules without needing the tablet control panel, it’s also a bit more like the handpoints on the real thing at minor stations.

HOm HSB modules

They are set back from the track so they can be covered with a bush if using the control panel on the app.

Well I bought book 1 today after book 2 arrived this morning and contained lots of stuff I’d not seen before plus a station by station survey.

Book 1 contains the Brocken and Nordhausen routes while Book 2 covers the Selketal

There’s a mix of photos, track diagrams  , aerial photos in colour or b&w

Be careful these are around €39 each but there’s an older much more basic book by the same author for around €20 the think to look for is Band1 or 2 in addition to the price difference.

Another idea I've been playing with for a while are some random action cards.

I've made them station specific and there will be about 6-8 cards for each station with minor or major actions to do. I've also added a special party coach card that will travel with the coach to one end or the other and then be picked up again later by being inserted into the pack. There will be dice to roll and you only pick a card if you get a 6.

Excellent, glad its not just me.  I used to have a 20 sided dice when operating Caolisport rolled every 12 hours to bring up an array of operational and technical problems.  Really brings a layout to life and challenges operators.  The idea of stepping up locos and stock or working around points failures is part and parcel of railway operations.  No point having a fantastic model if its not going to be operated correctly.

Is there a good track plan in the book for Nordhausen?

Dunno yet Ian, book 2 arrived I only ordered book 1 today as I hadn’t realised there were 2! Brocken & Wernigerode- Nordhausen are in book 2 which should be here next week. I’ll email you the plan I have from the earlier edition, the new books seem to be based on this but have expanded the photos and info significantly. There are a few new plans too but they seem to be mostly diagrammatic line diagrams for the modern operation.

The new edition is the larger hardback on the left and the original paperback, which is effectively a quarter of the price, on the right.

It only mentions it’s part 2, (Band 2), on the spine which is why I didn’t realise initially. I’d found a review and it mentioned it was expanded but only showed part 2. Fortunately I was impressed enough from just flicking through that the first part would be of interest too so I’ve ordered it. I do like to sit and just read and learn a bit more German so it suits me ;)

Well - a book I better do not buy - otherwise I get the same virus Paul seems to have since quite some time...

Anyway - if you get stuck with the German, even I speak the more southern dialect, I may be able to help.

Thanks :) I usually manage to break it down thanks to the TextGrabber app. I keep buying books like I’m going to do a scale version, rather than my freelanced approach based on a what if, but they are fascinating and I’m a sucker for nice photos and drawings!

Plus my four long coaches arrived so I now have more variety in the HSB era.

It has long puzzled me that the track layout at busy Drei Annen Hohne requires Brocken and Harzquerbahn trains to share rails at the west end. In the illustration above it looks like a double slip, but these days I think is simply a short section of track between the junction and the throat. Compare this to the layouts at rather-less-busy Alexisbad, Stiege and Eisfelder Talmühle, where parallel moves are possible and do happen.

Yes I’ve also always thought it was strange, there’s plenty of room too.

I presume that you have a copy of the inspirational book

oh yes, excellent but I think he’s surpassed it with Zug in die Wolken.
